#6 Pandas down ‘Horns

Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorns were upended by the CIS ranked #6 women's basketball team, the Alberta Pandas, on Friday by a score of 75-53.
 
Elle Hendershot led the Pandas with a double-double, scoring 13 points and picking up 12 rebounds. Maddie Rogers was the only other Panda to hit for double digits and finished the night with 10 points.
 
Zoe Dahl led the 'Horns in points with 14, and Mariah Miller contributed a double-double of her own, with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Teesha Olsen came off the bench to chip in with 13 points.
 
The Pandas proved why they were worth of the sixth spot in the CIS top ten, opening up the game with 10 unanswered points. Zoe Dahl and Mariah Miller three-pointers brought the game back within reach, but the Pandas kept pouring it on, giving the 'Horns all they could handle and more. The opening quarter ended with the Pandas up 20-11.
 
The second quarter was much the same, the Pandas didn't let up, but nor did the 'Horns. No huge runs on either side, but the Pandas got the better of the 'Horns, and took a 36-24 lead to the half.
 
Elle Hendershot and Maddie Rogers led the Pandas with 8 points each Zoe Dahl bagged 8 points to lead the 'Horns in the first half,, while Mariah Miller was right on her tail with 7.
 
The Pandas shot 41.2% from the field, and 33.3% on three pointers in the first half. The 'Horns went 24.2% from the field, and 38.5% from behind the three-point line. Alberta took the edge in rebounds, snatching 26 to the 'Horns 18.
 
The mismatch continued into the second half, as the Pandas just would not give the 'Horns anything to work with. The 'Horns kept pace with the Pandas most of the second half, but couldn't make up any ground and get back within striking distance to claim a win.
 
The Pandas finished the night with an impressive 43.8% shooting from the field, and 38.9% from behind the three-point line. The 'Horns went 27.0% from the field, and 22.7% from beyond the arch. The Pandas took the edge in rebounds, 47-36.
 
The two teams will face off again Saturday at 5:00pm at 1st Choice Savings Centre in Lethbridge. The game is also available on canadawest.tv.
