Winnipeg – Following a weekend opening loss, the Lethbridge Pronghorns rebounded to earn a split with the Winnipeg Wesmen, clawing out a 78-75 win.
The Wesmen held a 24-14 lead after 10 minutes, but the 'Horns chipped away at the early double digit deficit, but didn't take a lead until the midway point of the third quarter The result was in doubt for the entire fourth quarter with the lead changing three times in the final two minutes but, two Mike Pierzchala free throws in the dying seconds secured the win.
The loss pulled the Pronghorns back to even with Winnipeg in the conference standings, both with identical 4-2 records.
Elliott Sentance led all scorers and the Pronghorns with 25 points, while Zac Overwater finished just behind him with 23 points.
Sean Tarver and Marcello Kambola were both sparks off the bench for the Wesmen, with Tarver notching a team-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals.
The 'Horns finished the night shooting 45% on the night but were an impressive 53.8% in the second half, including hitting 5 of 7 shots from downtown. The Wesmen also shot 45% on the night but the difference in the end, was the 'Horns hitting four more free throws than their hosts.
The Wesmen were outrebounded 30-28 and committed 18 turnovers, but the U of W bench outscored Lethbridge's reserves 35-5.
The 'Horns will have a short week to prepare for the Calgary Dinos as the home-and-home series starts in Lethbridge Thursday night.
