Pronghorns look to punch ticket to post-season versus Heat

1/25/2017 3:01:00 PM

Lethbridge – Coming off a road sweep of the Victoria Vikes last weekend, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team looks to cement their place in the Canada West playoffs, hosting the UBCO Heat in their final home games of the regular season. The Pronghorns and Heat will hit the hardwood at the 1st Choice Savings Centre Friday night at 8:00pm and Saturday night at 7:00pm. Both games can also be viewed on www.canadawest.tv.

Sitting at 10-6, the Pronghorns need one win to clinch a playoff spot and last Friday night's win over the Vikes was the Pronghorns first in Victoria since February 24, 2001 when they won game two of the Canada West semi-final.

While a win will clinch a post-season berth, seeding for the playoffs is all dependent on RPI (Rating Percentage Index). This season the top 12 teams based on winning percentage qualify for the playoffs but will then be ranked 1 to 12 based on each team's RPI Standing in order to account for the various strengths of schedules faced by each team in an unbalanced schedule. The 'Horns remain 8th in the Canada West RPI.

On paper this weekend's match up would be considered a mismatch. UBCO (2-12) has been eliminated from post season contention. The Heat had their bye week last week but were swept by the Victoria Vikes two weeks ago. Entering the second last weekend of the conference schedule, the 'Horns are statistically the superior team at both ends of the floor, ranked ninth in Canada West offensively (79.5 ppg) and sixth defensively (78.1 ppg). The Heat are the lowest scoring team in Canada West, averaging 66.9 points per game and are ranked 13th defensively (81.4 ppg).

Elliott Sentance continues to lead the Pronghorns in scoring, averaging 19.5 points per game, while Dejon Burdeaux sits second with 15.8 points per game but leads Canada West in both assists (4.7) and steals (3.6) per game.

For the Heat, Aldrich Berrios leads the way with 17.9 points per game and Mitch Goodwin is chipping in with 13.6 points a night.

In conjunction with the Student Athlete Mental Health Initiative (SAMHI) and the 'Huddle Up' campaign, the Pronghorn student-athlete council will be raffling off a Clara Hughes signed Pronghorn jersey and taking donations for SAMHI.

Saturday night will also mark the finale of the Train Oilfield Bridge Bucks giveaway which gave $100 in bridge bucks to one U of L student each home game. For Saturday night's game one U of L student in attendance will win $750 in bridge bucks. Students can fill out a ballot as they enter the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

Check-in to Saturday night's game on The Horn mobile app. The winner of the Fan Cam contest will also get a chance to win $750 by making a lay-up, free-throw, and half-court shot in 25 seconds!

Pronghorns Athletics will also recognize on Saturday the many volunteers from its Operation Red Nose campaign. Over the successful 12 night campaign, 629 volunteers traveled more than 23,000 km to provide the 1159 safe rides home in the community.

The 'Horns will wrap up the Canada West regular season next weekend, traveling to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Golden Bears.
