Lethbridge – Coming off a season opening sweep, the Lethbridge Pronghorns women's basketball looks to keep the ball rolling this weekend, traveling to Edmonton to face the MacEwan Griffins.
The Pronghorns and Griffins will hit Griffins home court, Friday night at 6:00pm and then face a short turnaround, playing Saturday at 1:00pm. Both games will be streamed on
www.canadawest.tv.
Last season, the Pronghorns and Griffins faced off in Lethbridge, splitting their weekend set. The Pronghorns opened with a tight 58-57 win, before dropping a 67-39 decision the next night.
A Look at the teams
After a strong preseason, the Pronghorns kept the momentum going last weekend, sweeping an experienced Brandon Bobcat team. The Pronghorns beat the Bobcats by scores of 84-58 and 87-82.
Through two games, the Pronghorns have the second best offence in Canada West, averaging 85.5 points per game and sit ranked 10
th defensively, allowing 70 points against.
On the road last weekend, the Griffins were swept by the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. TRU beat the Griffins 72-58 Friday night and edged the Griffins Saturday 65-61.
Statistically, the Griffins hold the 11
th ranked offence (59.5 ppg) and then ninth ranked defence (68.5 ppg).
Players to watch
Fifth-year guard Zoe Dahl averaged 16.5 points in the Pronghorns season opening wins, while Kacie Bosch, who made her Pronghorn debut, had a solid return after missing all of last season. Bosch averaged 11.5 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists.
A pair of freshmen led the Pronghorns in rebounds, as Amy Mazutinec and Jessica Zarowny each grabbed 15 rebounds in the two games last weekend.
Guard Kayla Ivicak leads the Griffins attack, averaging 14 points per game, while Mackenzie Farmer is the only other Griffin to average double digits after last weekend, averaging 10 points.
The Pronghorns will be on home court next Thursday night, hosting the Mount Royal Cougars in the front half of a home-and-home series.
