Pronghorns can't contain Dinos attack

CALGARY – After holding their opponents to a mere three points in the first quarter, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's basketball team couldn't hold off the Calgary Dinos in the final three quarters, dropping a 67-53 decision at the Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary.

Saturday's game was all Dinos following their struggles in the first quarter, as they collected over 20 points in the final three frames. Calgary was also able to capitalize from beyond the three point line, as they went 9-for-29 on the night, compared to the 3-for-22 performance by Lethbridge.

The Dinos have now won five consecutive games and sit comfortably with a playoff spot clinched and a 13-5 record. The Pronghorns drop a sixth straight game and fall to 10-8 on the season, but have clinched a playoff spot.

After the first quarter, the score was an underwhelming 8-3 in favour of the Pronghorns as the Dinos went 1-for-16 from the field. 

 
Calgary brushed themselves off in the second quarter coming back from a 15-5 Lethbridge lead to take a 25-22 lead going into the half on the back of a couple big three pointers from Katie Upham. 

Calgary was dominant in the second half of the game, scoring 20 points in the third and adding another 22 in the fourth to pull away. In addition to shooting just under 50 percent from the field, they also were strong in the rebound department, picking up 19 boards.

Shannon Hatch paved the way for the Dinos in scoring with 14 points. Hatch was also a threat on the offensive rebounds, picking up five. Laura Grabe and Brianna Ghali also attributed to the scoring, providing 12 and 10 points respectively.

Danielle Fritzke dropped 15 points with three baskets coming from beyond the arc to lead the Pronghorns.

The Dinos will return to the court on Thursday, Feb. 1 for Pack the Jack and the final home game of the season against their inner city rivals, the Mount Royal Cougars. 

Lethbridge will close out their season at home against the Alberta Pandas with games next Friday and Saturday.
