CALGARY – Closing out the 2018 Canada West season, the Lethbridge Pronghorns allowed a goal in each half and were unable to convert on their opportunities, dropping a 2-0 decision in Calgary to the Mount Royal Cougars in Canada West women's soccer action.
Coming off a loss yesterday that eliminated the Pronghorns from post-season contention, the Pronghorns led in majority of the statistical categories at the final whistle except the one that mattered, the scoreboard. The Pronghorns had nine shot attempts in the second half to finish the game with 10, five of which were on goal, compared to the Cougars six shot attempts, with three being on goal.
Kaitlyn Clarke scored both goals for the Cougars, while MRU keeper Rose Hemans made five saves to earn the clean sheet. Pronghorn goalkeeper Chelsey Galbraith made one save in the loss.
In the first half of the game at the fifteen-minute mark, Cougars forward Kaitlyn Clarke took a long-range shot at the Pronghorns net which struck the crossbar and narrowly crossed the goal-line which put Mount Royal in the driver's seat. At halftime, the score remained 1-0 for the Cougars.
The second half kicked off and after a period of play, a fabulous save lead to a goal. At one end Rose Hemans made a stupendous diving save to stop a breakaway from Lethbridge's Lindsay Amatto. The Cougars collected the rebound and went the other direction and Kaitlyn Clarke scored her second of the game.
This lead remained, and the Cougars finished their last game of the season with a win, improving to 6-6-2, while the Pronghorns finished the season with a final record of 2-11-1. The Booster Juice Players of the Game were Lindsay Amatto from the Pronghorns and Claire Thorimbert from the Cougars.
