CALGARY – In the front half of an important home-and-home series, the Lethbridge Pronghorns dropped their fifth game in a row, falling 2-1 to the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary in Canada West women's hockey action.
The loss drops the Pronghorns record to 3-8-0-2 and five points behind the Cougars for the final playoff spot in Canada West. The win vaults the Cougars to 5-7-0-1 and within two points of the Regina Cougars for fifth place.
The game truly kicked off with 13 minutes left in the first period, when Cougars forward Kate Scidmore scored the first goal of the game. Scidmore's goal ended up being the only goal of the first period.
The Pronghorns came into the second period down just one and had to fight hard to keep the Cougars from furthering their lead, as the Cougars dominated the shot category.
Halfway through the second period Cougars forward Morgan Ramsay was body-checked into the boards by Pronghorns forward Alli Borrow. Ramsay was helped off the ice and Borrow was handed a game misconduct, though the Cougars were unable to score on the power-play.
As the clock ticked down, Scidmore's goal remained the only point on the scoreboard.
After a slight lull in the game, the third period brought an action-packed 20 minutes. The commentators mentioned it was some of the quickest they've seen the women's teams thus far in the season.
Pronghorn goalie Alicia Anderson protected her net from three close calls in a row, maintaining the tension on the ice. However, Anderson's streak was broken by Cougars defender Mackenzie Butz, bringing the score to 2-0.
After a scramble in front of Cougars goalie Zoe De Beauville, Pronghorn Ashley McCabe scored her first of the season to cut the Cougars lead to only one.
With barely two minutes on the clock, the Cougars were given a penalty, and the Pronghorns had their shot to tie the score, however the Cougars were able to survive the late Pronghorn power play and secured the 2-1 win.
