LETHBRIDGE – Playing in the final conference games of the first semester the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's basketball team takes on southern Alberta rival Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series.
The two-game set begins Thursday night in Lethbridge at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The rematch is scheduled for Saturday night in Calgary at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on
www.canadawest.tv.
During Thursday night's game, the University of Lethbridge Students' Union is running a food drive to support its food bank and Pronghorn Athletics would like to invite all southern Alberta students and anyone age 17 or younger to bring a food donation and receive free admission to the game.
A look at the teams:
The Pronghorns (5-3) put an end to a three-game losing streak with a win Saturday night over the Wesmen. The Pronghorns opened the season with four straight wins before losing three in a row prior to Saturday night.
Statistically the Pronghorns sit 10th in team scoring averaging 68 points per game, but they are ranked third in team defence allowing 61.9 points per game. The Pronghorns are also ranked third in steals per game with 10.3.
The Dinos (7-3) enter the weekend riding a five-game winning streak and are currently tied for second in Canada West. The Dinos are coming off a weekend sweep of Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg.
Currently the Dinos rank fifth in team offence, scoring 75.5 points per game and also sit fifth defensively, allowing 65.1 points per contest. Through 10 games, the Dinos lead the conference in steals per game with 13.2.
Players to watch:
Sitting fourth in team scoring, senior guard Danielle Fritzke hit six three-pointers last Saturday and led the Pronghorn to victory with 23 points. She averages 9.3 points per game through eight games this season.
Kacie Bosch (10.5 ppg), Amy Mazutinec (10.3 ppg) and Katie Keith (10 ppg) are the top three scorers on the Pronghorns this season. Keith registered her fourth double-double of the season in last Saturday's win.
The Dinos are led by Erin McIntosh, who averages 16.5 points per game. She also leads the Dinos in rebounding with 6.5 per night and sits second in the conference in three point percentage at 50%
Bobbi Jo Colburn is the only other Dino to average double digits in points thus far this season, averaging 10.4.
