CALGARY – Opening the 2018 season on the road, the Lethbridge Pronghorns couldn't spoil the Mount Royal Cougars' home opener, being shutout 3-0 at Mount Royal's Stadium field in Calgary.
David Schefer, Orest Ndabanzee and Daniel Harrison scored for the Cougars, while keeper Kryan Valley earned the clean sheet for the Cougars.
Pronghorn keeper Nolan French made seven saves in a losing effort. Stephen Primeau and newcomer Faith Marufu led the Pronghorns with two shot attempts each and both registered one shot on goal.
In a spirited affair that saw the two teams combine for six yellow cards, Mount Royal held the advantage in shot attempts 15-6, while the Pronghorns hit the net three times compared to 11 shots on target from the Cougars. The Pronghorns held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Moe El Gandour found David Schaefer and he opened the scoring, scoring his first goal as a Cougar in the 21st minute.
In the second half Orest Ndabanzee doubled the Cougars lead in the 76th minute and only minutes later, the Cougars were awarded a free kick and captain Daniel Harrison made no mistake to give the home side a 3-0 lead.
The Pronghorns will wrap up the season opening road trip tomorrow afternoon, facing the Calgary Dinos. Kick-off is slated for 2:00pm and all the action can be caught on www.canadawest.tv.
