REGINA, Sask. – Looking to push a season opening streak to four games, the Lethbridge Pronghorns allowed two powerplay goals in the second period and were never able to find their stride offensively, dropping their first game of the Canada West season, 2-1 to the Regina Cougars on the road.
Jaycee Magwood and Shaelyn Vallotton scored for the Cougars, who improve to 1-3-0-0 with the gritty win. Eryn Johanson replied for the visitors, as Lethbridge loses their first game of the season, falling to 3-1-0-0.
Morgan Baker was the winning netminder, finishing the afternoon with 19 saves. Alicia Anderson stopped 18 shots in net for the Pronghorns.
The Pronghorns opened the scoring on a five-on-three advantage in the first period, as Johanson crept up from the point and took a feed, beating Baker with a low shot to the blocker side through traffic.
Magwood drew the Cougars even before the end of the first period, scoring her second of the season. The Cougar captain worked her way in front of the net and was left alone by the Lethbridge defence, leaving her plenty of space to deflect a point shot from Tamara McVannel into the goal behind Anderson.
Vallotton's goal came with just 16 seconds remaining in the second period, also on the powerplay. The Cougars forced a turnover deep in the Lethbridge zone and Chelsea Hallson worked it back to the point. Vallotton collected it and sent a low wrist shot towards the goal that fooled Anderson and slipped into the back of the net to give the Cougars their first lead of the weekend.
For the second game in a row, the third period was a back and forth struggle but didn't produce many quality chances. The 'Horns had an opportunity to even the score with the clock ticking away, but Kaitlyn Crowe tied up Tricia Van Vaerenbergh who had her eyes on a loose puck and an open Cougar net.
The Cougars will be at home again next weekend with a matchup against the UBC Thunderbirds at The Co-operators Centre. Lethbridge will return home to host the Saskatchewan Huskies.
