Pronghorns playoff aspirations take a hit in Calgary

CALGARY – Heading into the stretch drive of the Canada West season and a playoff berth in mind, the Lethbridge Pronghorns hold on the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division was weakened Saturday afternoon, suffering a 1-0 loss at the hands of the Mount Royal Cougars.

The loss drops the Pronghorns record to 0-5-6 on the season and only a single point ahead of the Cougars for sixth spot in the division. The Cougars improve to 1-7-2 with four games to play.  

Both teams were slow out of the gate offensively in the first few minutes, but Lethbridge soon took the first possession. They managed to hold the field for a bit but were overturned by the Cougars forward line. 

Less than five minutes into the game, Cougars forward Jullien Ramirez scored her first goal of the season after a brief struggle in front of the Pronghorns net. Lethbridge soon retaliated with a couple shots of their own but were unable to defeat Cougars keeper Miah Godek.

Both teams were getting tripped up by several fouls but regained their strides halfway through the half. Lethbridge registered several shots attempts as they danced around the home team's defenses but were unable to capitalize.  

As halftime approached, the Cougars returned the favor, gaining possession of the field and Despite repeatedly called for offside, they maintained control of the game until the halftime whistle. 

Both teams registered five shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes.

The match resumed with a fierce offensive from the Pronghorns as they tried to find the equalizer. However, the Cougars were quick regain their momentum, with the only shots on net through the first 15 minutes.

The Cougars held a strong defensive line for much of the second half, not allowing the Pronghorns generate quality scoring chances and it wasn't unitl the 76th minute that the Pronghorns were able to register a shot on goal. 

The Pronghorns managed to dominate the final minutes of play as the Cougars were struggling through several fouls. The game ended with one last attempt by Lethbridge to tie the game, but the shot flew high.

The Pronghorns will get another crack at the Cougars tomorrow afternoon, this time in Lethbridge, kick off is slated for 12:00 pm. The game will also be streamed live on www.canadawest.tv.
