EDMONTON – Looking for a weekend sweep on the road, the Lethbridge Pronghorns saw the defending Canada West Champion Alberta Pandas respond following last night's Pronghorn win, scoring twice in the third period en route to a weekend split with a 3-1 win.
Abby Benning, Madison Willan and Kennedy Ganser scored for Alberta, while Alex Poznikoff chipped in with two assists as the Pandas improved to 5-3 this season.
Tricia Van Vaerenbergh scored the lone marker for the Pronghorns, who fell to 5-2, but remain in top spot of the Canada West standings.
Lethbridge took a 1-0 lead on Van Vaerenbergh's second goal of the season at the 10:46 mark of the opening period, but then Alberta responded with three unanswered goals and really dictated the play in both zones, outshooting the Pronghorns 29-12, including 14-3 in the third period.
Fourth-year goaltender Kirsten Chamberlin made 11 saves for her second win of the 2019-20 campaign.
One night after Alicia Anderson (5-2) made 41 saves in a 2-1 Pronghorns win, the Pandas made it much tougher on the fifth-year goaltender.
Benning's tying goal just 4:05 later came off a broken play as she pinched in from the point and sent a backhand through traffic that found its way past Anderson.
Willan's power play marker early in the third period that stood as the game-winner was a perfect deflection off a Poznikoff shot and with Danielle Hardy providing a screen in front, Anderson had no chance.
Ganser's insurance goal at 7:16 of the third period was the result of some hard work down low between her, Poznikoff and Autumn MacDougall.
Alberta will face the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series next weekend, while Lethbridge enters a bye week, before a home-and-home series with the Mount Royal Cougars (Nov.8-9).
