LETHBRIDGE – In a rematch of last season's quarterfinal match-up, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's basketball team opens the new Canada West season, hosting the Alberta Pandas for a pair of games at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

Tip-off is slated for Friday night at 6:00 pm and Saturday night at 5:00 pm. Both games will also streamed live on www.canadawest.tv, presented by Co-op.

The Pronghorns and Pandas squared off in the Canada West quarterfinal last year in Edmonton with the Pronghorns coming out on top in the best of three series with a two-game sweep.

A look at the teams

Coming off the program's most successful season in 24 years, the Pronghorns will look to build on that success with an experienced squad.

Finishing 12-8 in conference action a year ago, the Pronghorns hosted the Manitoba Bisons in a play-in game before advancing to the series with the Pandas. Following the series win over the Pandas, the Pronghorns were eliminated by the eventual Canada West Champion Saskatchewan Huskies.

Three fifth-year seniors are expected to lead the Pronghorns this season with leading scorer and Canada West Second Team All-Star Kacie Bosch headlining the group. Bosch averaged 15.1 points per game a year ago.

Joining Bosch playing in their final campaign are Asnate Fomina and Katie Keith, while Amy Mazutinec and Jessica Zarowny are expected to take on a bigger role again this season.

Last year, the Pandas earned home court in last year's playoffs with a 15-5 record, which included two wins over the Pronghorns in Edmonton in November before the Pronghorns returned the favour in the playoffs.

A season ago, the Pandas did not have one senior in their line up and the bulk of that young squad returns this season, including a pair of fourth-years that led the team in scoring in 2018-19.

Emma Kary and Vanessa Wild will be continued to be counted on after averaging 17.2 and 15.3 points respectively last season as juniors.
