LETHBRIDGE - Following a sweep of the Brandon Bobcats the previous weekend, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns outlasted the University of Manitoba Bisons 75-74, handing the Bisons their first loss of the season.
Â
The Pronghorns headed into the final quarter with a 56-54 lead, after both teams led by as many as 11 points for the 'Horns, and 8 for the Bisons. The Pronghorns would start the final quarter on a 10-4 run, prompting a Bisons timeout with 7:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, up 66-58. No points would be scored again until the 5:30 mark, as Kacie Bosch would utilize her agility to drive into the outside lane to finish for two.
Â
Down by ten points, the Bisons would dig deep, connecting on consecutive three pointers to force a Pronghorns timeout with 3:30 to go in the game. Out of the timeout, Jessica Haenni, Amy Mazutinec, and Katie Keith would come up big for the home side, scoring on consecutive layups to restore an eight-point, 74-66 lead for the 'Horns.
Â
The Bisons would refuse to go away, embarking on a 5-0 run in the ensuing minute, trimming the deficit to 74-71 with 30-seconds to play. A turnover on the inbound would give the ball to the Bisons with a chance to tie the game. Ultimately, the 'Horns would come up with a stop to clinch the victory.
Â
With the win, the Pronghorns improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Bisons drop to 2-1.
Â
The home side was led by a balanced attack, with eight of their nine dressed players scoring. Jessica Haenni, Katie Keith, Kacie Bosch, Amy Mazutinec, and Savannah McKee all put up double digits, with 13, 12, 12, 11, and 11 points a piece. Keith and Mazutinec would record a team high 7 rebounds, while Bosch would lead the 'Horns with 9 assists.
Â
The Bisons were led by rookie guard Lauren Bartlett who paced her team with 20 points, while Taylor Randall, Addison Martin, and Emma Thompson would add 19, 14, and 12 points a piece.
Â
The 'Horns jumped out to a blistering start, with Katie Keith scoring on the team's first possession. Jessica Haenni would follow with a three pointer, before a Kacie Bosch jumper would give the home side a 7-0 lead. The Bisons would quickly find their touch, embarking on a 20-5 run to close the first quarter. After starting the game 3 of 3 shooting, Lethbridge would only be able to find success on two of their final 15 shots to close the quarter.
Â
The Pronghorns would start the second quarter with the same tenacity they started the first. After back-to-back buckets, Kacie Bosch would hit a three pointer to narrow the Bisons lead to one, 20-19. Neither team would find much success on the offensive side of the ball from that point on, with the teams combining for four points in four minutes, thanks to stifling defense from both sides. Third-year forward Jessica Zarowny would break this spell at the four-minute mark of the quarter with an easy layup, thanks to a perfect bounce pass into the post from Jessica Haenni. From there, the 'Horns would heat up on offense, embarking on a 14-5 run in the final three minutes. The highlight of this stretch would be Kacie Bosch dropping a Bisons defender with a nasty crossover, before kicking the ball out to Savannah McKee for a three pointer. The 'Horns would take a 36-28 lead into halftime.
Â
Jessica Haenni would start the third quarter with a three pointer, only to be answered by the Bisons. From there, the teams would heighten the intensity, trading tough baskets and foul shots. The Bisons defense would step up, creating multiple turnovers for fast break points. A corner three from the Bisons would cut the Pronghorns lead to one, 45-44. The 'Horns would respond with a bucket, before another Manitoba corner three would tie the game 47-47.
Â
The teams would battle back and forth in the final quarter, with the 'Horns ultimately coming up victorious to extend their winning streak to four games.
Â
The Pronghorns and Bisons will meet again tomorrow night to wrap up the weekend series. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the First Choice Savings Center in Lethbridge.
