Pronghorn Athletics launches 25th Installment of Operation Red Nose

11/18/2019 10:40:00 AM

Lethbridge, November 19th, 2019 – Operation Red Nose will be back for the 25th year of its annual Holiday campaign in Lethbridge starting November 29th, 2019.

Operation Red Nose is a unique program dedicated to the fight against impaired driving. During the Christmas holiday season, individuals who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive can be driven home in their own vehicle by a team of Red Nose volunteers. There is no fee for the service, but donations are accepted.

In addition to being a safe driving campaign, Operation Red Nose is a fundraising activity for Pronghorn Athletics. Over the past 24 years, more than $774,000 has been raised in support for the Pronghorn teams. Last season, Operation Red Nose provided 1103 rides, which was 136 more from the previous year, with the help from more than 569 volunteers.

The record for number of rides in one campaign for Operation Red Nose in Lethbridge was set in 2011, when 1428 rides were provided.

Teams of volunteers provide the Red Nose service. The escort driver drives the volunteers to pick up clients, the designated driver drives the clients' vehicle with the client in it, and the navigator rides along in the clients' vehicle and completes the paper work.

Pronghorn Athletics supplies the majority of volunteers, while these numbers are supplemented by community volunteers. In Lethbridge, Operation Red Nose has been well supported by community groups, businesses and individuals. More volunteers are always needed, especially on New Year's Eve.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Pronghorn Athletics at orn@uleth.ca or go to http://gohorns.ca to download the volunteer application form. Follow Operation Red Nose on twitter for up to date information: @ORNLethbridge

Sponsors, both financial and of products and services, are key to enabling the program to be offered at no cost. Lethbridge businesses have been terrific in providing their support for this valuable service. Along with cash donations, all food and refreshments for volunteers, gas, phone service, and insurance coverage is donated.

Alpine Insurance and Intact Insurance have taken on a huge role co-sponsoring the insurance coverage for this season's program. Anyone interested in getting involved with the program should contact Pronghorn Athletics.
