LETHBRIDGE: With two goals in a two-minute span late in the second half, the Lethbridge Pronghorns battled back from two goals down and a long weather delay to earn a 2-2 draw with the MacEwan Griffins in Canada West men's soccer action
Â
Danilo Morales and Ben Kutas scored only minutes apart in the final three minutes to bring the Pronghorns back level. The Griffins were paced by goals from Stefan Gajic and Michael Enes.
Â
Both teams move to 0-1-1 on the season. The Griffins dropped their season opener on Friday in Saskatoon 3-2 to the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Â
Coming off a season opening loss to the Alberta Golden Bears, the Pronghorns found themselves on their heels early and were unable to weather the early Griffins storm.
Â
Following a sustained early possession advantage, MacEwan opened the scoring just past the 16-minute mark. Stefan Gajic half volleyed a bouncing ball just inside the penalty area, beating 'Horns keeper Matt Vandervoort to the top left corner.
Â
Only six minutes in, the Griffins doubled the lead. Michael Enes corralled a pass at the top of the box and turned a fired a shot past Vandervoort.
Â
With the Griffins still controlling the pace of play, the game was halted for nearly an hour due to lightning in the area. Early into the restart, the Griffins nearly added to the lead but Vandervoort made a stellar save off of Everett Orgnero point blank.
Â
In the second half, the Pronghorns were able to establish a bit of an offensive attack as the half went on but were unable to break through the Griffins backline.
Â
MacEwan had another dangerous chance to add to their goal total in the 75
th minute but Joseph Abrahart's close range shot found the post.
Â
Still pushing to get on the scoreboard late, Pronghorn Ben Kutas raced Griffins' keeper Seth Johnstone for a loose ball, both sliding for the ball, but Johnstone narrowly beat Kutas, smothering the ball in the process.
Â
Only minutes later, Danilo Morales stole the ball from a Griffins' defender in MacEwan's penalty area and beat Johnstone for his first of the season and cutting the deficit to one with only three minutes to play.
Â
With time winding down, Ben Kutas brought the Pronghorns back level. Following an initial save from Johnstone, Freshman Deepak Bains directed the rebound back towards the goal line only to be cleared off the line by a Griffins defender. Fortunate for the Pronghorns it was right to Kutas who had a wide-open net to slot his first of the season.
Â
Like the score, stats were nearly even, with the Griffins finishing the match with 12 shot attempts to the Pronghorns 11 but the Pronghorns found the mark seven times, compared to MacEwan's six. MacEwan held a distinct advantage in corner kick attempts, 9 to 2.
Â
The Pronghorns will be back in action next weekend, heading to Calgary take on the Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars. The Griffins will have a bye next weekend, before hosting the Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars in two weeks time.
