Pronghorns drop second straight

CALGARY - Feathers littered the pitch and fog loomed on the horizon for kickoff between the Mount Royal Cougars and Lethbridge Pronghorns, the Cougars rode two first half goals to a 3-1 victory of the Lethbridge.

Mount Royal was paced by goals by Orest Ndabaneze, Dane Comic and Tysen Chatani. Ellis Davies responded for the Pronghorns from the penalty spot.

The loss drops the Pronghorns to 0-3-1 on the season and still in search of their first win of the 2019 Canada West season.

The game began with a string of Mount Royal corner kicks, one of which awarded their first shot on net against Lethbridge keeper Matthew Vandervoort.

Mount Royal's Dane Domic was searching for his second goal of the season as he gave a strong effort against the Pronghorns with many shots on net. Finally, after 20 minutes of play, Ndabaneze was able to sneak past the Lethbridge keeper for the Cougars' first goal of the night.

The Pronghorns' defense was struggling to fend off the Cougars as they peppered them with shots. They rallied against the home team with a near miss of their own going just wide.

Before the whistle for halftime, Domic finally succeeded in scoring his second goal of the season with an assist from defenseman Tom Reutten.

The second half opened with a string of fouls on both sides, one of which led to a penalty kick for the Pronghorns. Davies was able to sink it deep into the net for the first goal against Cougar keeper Kyran Valley this season.

Mount Royal's Dawid Dudek tried to sneak one past the visitor's defense but was unable to fend off the fresh substitutions made by Lethbridge. MRU's Tysen Chatani found his own challenges after another round of Pronghorn switches but found a way to score to regain the Cougars two goal cushion

As the final whistle blew, the Cougars remain undefeated with their third straight victory of the season.

The Pronghorns will return home for one game next weekend, hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies next Saturday.  Kick off is slated for 2:15 at the University Community Stadium, the game will be also streamed live on canadawest.tv presented by Co-op.
