LETHBRIDGE: Taking advantage of two set pieces and scoring one in each half, the visiting Fraser Valley Cascades handed the Lethbridge Pronghorns a 2-0 loss Saturday afternoon in Canada West men's soccer action.
Â
Nawaf Binsaleh scored off a first half corner kick and Parman Minhas connected on a long throw to propel the Cascades to their third win of the season and even their record to 3-3-3. The Pronghorns drop their third straight contest and fall to 0-6-2.
Â
Following a cautious opening for the first 20 plus minutes, the Pronghorns had the first quality chance to get on the scoresheet. Off a Danilo Morales corner kick, freshman Jaden Veluw got a head on the corner that eluded UFV keeper Ethan Duggan but rang off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Â
A short time later, Veluw had another good look but Duggan was able to dive to his left to direct the ball into touch.
Â
From there, the Cascades upped their attack with Mikael Mainella half volleying a shot from the top of the box only to see Pronghorn keeper Matt Vandervoort get a finger on the shot and push the ball over the crossbar.
Â
Off a corner of their own, the Cascades broke the deadlock in the 41
st minute. Nawaf Binsaleh out maneuvered a Pronghorn defender to get his head on Brady Weir's well played ball and into the corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
Â
Gurmaan Jhaj had a great look to extend the lead as the half was coming to a close but Vandervoort was able to just get enough of the shot to keep his team within one heading into halftime.
Â
The second half was very similar to the opening 45 minutes with both teams having opportunities to score but again only one team would.
Â
In the 56
th minute, first-year Pronghorn Kyle Szymanski let a rocket of a shot fly from just inside the Cascades penalty area but Duggan made a spectacular save, diving to his right.
Â
A short time later, Pronghorn forward Ben Kutas made a nice run down the left flank but his attempt at goal hit the side netting.
Â
From there the Cascades took control. Freshly subbed into the game, Parman Minhas made an immediate impact. Minhas connected a solid half volley that just missed high but he would not be kept off the scoresheet for long.
Â
In the 81
st minute, Minhas added the insurance marker the visitors were searching for. Off a long throw in from Atle Kellmel, Minhas was able to redirect the ball towards the Pronghorns net, one that could not be cleared off the line by Pronghorn Ellis Davies.
Â
At the final whistle, Fraser Valley held a 17 to 9 advantage in shot attempts, while hitting the net on six times. The Pronghorns forced Cascades keeper Duggan into three saves.
Â
The Pronghorns are back on their home pitch tomorrow afternoon, hosting the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, kick-off is slated for 2:15 pm. Today was the only game for the Cascades this weekend, but they will be on the road again next Saturday, traveling to Kelowna to face the UBCO Heat.
