Late goal lifts Pronghorns to draw with division leading Griffins

LETHBRIDGE – With winter rearing its ugly head in southern Alberta, the Lethbridge Pronghorns rallied with a late second half goal to erase a one goal deficit and earn a 1-1 tie with the Prairie Division leading MacEwan Griffins.

Jesse Dueck scored in the 88th to earn a point for the Pronghorns. For the Griffins Sofia DiGiacomo opened the scoring in the first half with her first tally of the season.

The tie was the second consecutive between the Pronghorns and Griffins following a 0-0 draw in Edmonton during the opening weekend of the Canada West season.

With the tie the Pronghorns see their record move to 0-4-3, while the Griffins now stand at 4-1-2.

First good opportunity was to the Griffins only three minutes into the contest. Striker Sunder West let go of a shot that beat Pronghorn keeper Hanna Quinn but rang off the crossbar.

Continuing with offensive pressure, the Griffins hand another good look at opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Meagan Lemoine stepped inside a Pronghorn defender and put a quality strike towards the Pronghorns goal, however Quinn was in good position to push the shot over the bar for a Griffins corner kick.

Off a set piece from MacEwan defender Jamie Erickson, the Griffins came close to scoring as the shot leaked through netminder Hanna Quinn but just slid by the post.

At the 32nd minute mark, Pronghorns rookie forward Tory Clements had the first dangerous chance for the Pronghorns. Clements broke through the middle defenders and offered a great shot on net, but MacEwan keeper Emily Burns made a diving save.

The Griffins found the back of the net in the 37th minute when Hanna Supina took the ball out wide and centered the ball to Sofia DiGiacomo who finished with the open cage.

Through 45 minutes, MacEwan attempted 11 shots to the Pronghorns four, with seven being on goal. The Pronghorns were credited with two shots on goal.

The snow fall and wind picked up again in the second half hindering the both teams attacks. The Griffins continued to push the pace which resulted in Meagan Lemoine getting a quality chance. Lemoine let a shot go just outside the box but Quinn was able to make the save while deflecting the ball off the crossbar.

In the 78th minute the Pronghorns had back to back corner kicks, Griffins keeper Emily Burns made a strong play on the first one, punching the ball into touch and the Pronghorns were unable to cash in on their second opportunity.

With time winding down, the Pronghorns picked up the important equalizer in the 88th minute off a corner kick. Senior defender Jesse Dueck was able to redirect Colette Mofakham's corner for her second of the season.

MacEwan pushed forward in the final two minutes and injury time but were not able to crack the Pronghorns defence.

On the day, the Griffins held a 21-to-13 advantage in shot attempts and were credited with 13 shots on goal compared to the Pronghorns seven.

The Pronghorns will remain at home tomorrow afternoon, hosting the Alberta Pandas. MacEwan will conclude their weekend road trip with a trip to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars.
