Pronghorns stymied again by the Huskies

SASKATOON –The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team picked up a 2-0 shutout victory over the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Merlis Belsher Place.

Camryn Drever recorded her second shutout of the season, while Abby Shirley's second-period tally stood as the game-winner. Bailee Bourassa's empty-net marker with under twenty seconds remaining in regulation sealed the weekend sweep for the Huskies. Rachel LundbergShyan EliasBrooklyn Haubrich and Emily Upgang all tacked on an assist in the shutout victory.

With the win, the Huskies continue their dominance on home ice over the visiting Pronghorns, as the home side defeated the visitors in their 13th consecutive regular-season contest in the Bridge City.

Camryn Drever got the call between the pipes for the Huskies after Jessica Vance got the start on Friday night. The Edmonton native stood tall, making 16 saves, blanking the visiting Pronghorns in her second start of the calendar year.

Pronghorns goaltender Alicia Anderson made her second start in as many nights and the fifth-year netminder was able to hold the Huskies to just one goal on 29 shots, but unfortunately for the Calgary native, her team was unable to find twine.

With the victory, the Huskies improve their record to 10-6-2-2 on the season, while the Pronghorns fall to 6-9-1-3 after the defeat.

A quiet first period saw Saskatchewan outshoot Lethbridge by an 11-6 margin before the Huskies opened the scoring midway through the second period.

After Anderson stopped an Emma Nutter point shot, a scramble for the puck ensued in front of the Pronghorns cage. With Lundberg and Elias each chipping away, the puck found its way to the side of the cage and on the stick of Shirley who made no mistake. Shirley wired the puck into the open net, as the Delisle, Sask. native matched her goal total from 2018-19 with her fifth of the season.

The Huskies, who took the one-goal lead into the third period, were able to seal the victory with 19 seconds left in the contest. With Anderson pulled in favour of an extra-attacker, the puck skipped out of the Huskies zone and onto the stick of Bourassa. The Weyburn, Sask. native held off a Pronghorns defenceman from the redline, backhanding the puck into the empty cage to record her eighth tally in her last eight games.

The Huskies will look to continue to build on the momentum from the sweep next weekend when they welcome the first-place Calgary Dinos to Merlis Belsher Place. Meanwhile, Lethbridge will back on home ice next weekend, as they play host to the Alberta Pandas, with the Pronghorns fighting to stay in the postseason race.
