Pronghorns earn a point but fall in shootout

CALGARY – For the second night in a row, the Lethbridge Pronghorns pushed the Mount Royal Cougars to overtime but for the second consecutive night only picked up a single point, falling 4-3 in a shootout.

Trailing 3-1 through 40 minutes, the Pronghorns scored twice in the third period to force the extra time but Connor Rankin and Andrew Fyten each scored in the shootout, while Cougar goaltender Riley Morris stopped both Luke Coleman and Michael Clarke to secure the two points.

With the loss, the Pronghorns playoff aspirations take a hit and fall to 5-16-3. With four games to play, the Pronghorns trail the Regina Cougars by six points for the final playoff spot. Mount Royal improves to 15-7-2 and will at least host the opening round of playoffs but are only six points out of a first round bye.

Brad Kennedy, Ryley Lindgren and Chris Gerrie scored in regulation time for the Cougars, while Torrin White, Taylor Fisher and Luke Coleman replied for the Pronghorns.

Jack Burgart started his second consecutive game for the Pronghorns and made 38 saves in the loss. His counterpart, Morris stopped 18 Pronghorn shots in the win.

Mount Royal opened the scoring only 2:15 into the game when Brad Kennedy fired a shot past Pronghorns goalie Jack Burgart after receiving a quick pass from Allan MacPherson.

As the game moved past the midway point of the first half, Ryley Lindgren extended the lead to two with his 15th of the season.

Just over a minute later, the Pronghorns found an answer. Fourth-year forward Torrin White received a pass from Michael Clarke to fire his fifth goal of the season to cut the lead in half heading into the first intermission.

As the Cougars did a night earlier, they finished the second period with a goal in the dying seconds. With just seven seconds remaining in the period, Mount Royal's Gerrie scored an unassisted marker to extend the lead back to two.

Looking to keep their playoff aspirations alive, the Pronghorns scored twice in the third, both on the powerplay to earn a single point. Taylor Fisher brought the Pronghorns within one with just under 14 minutes to play and Luke Coleman scored his team leading ninth goal of the season to complete the third period comeback.

After a pair of scoreless overtime periods, a shootout would be needed to decide the winner and the Cougars completed the four-point weekend with two goals in the shootout.

The Pronghorns will return home next weekend with their playoff lives on the line, hosting the UBC Thunderbirds.
