VANCOUVER — Kyra Greig had a career game Friday night, scoring the game tying marker late in the third period and following up with the double overtime winner for the Lethbridge Pronghorns who earned the 3-2 comeback win over the UBC Thunderbirds at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
With UBC hanging onto a one goal lead from the early stages of the second period, the Pronghorns pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker as the final minute of the third approached. Greig picked up a rebound and potted it home for her sixth of the season to force extra time where the third-year forward played hero once again.
It was a rope-a-dope type effort for the 'Horns (7-13-2-3) who were outshot by a 32-19 margin while being forced to kill 10 minor penalties, successful on eight of them.
The visitors opened scoring with Katelyn Breitkreuz' first of the season with just over five minutes remaining in the first. Her initial shot was stopped by Tory Micklash but the veteran UBC goaltender didn't have complete control of the puck and Breitkreuz chased after her own rebound, batting it off of Micklash's blocker and into the back of the net.
The 'Birds (8-11-1-5) were able to get on even terms before the period was out, however, thanks to Rylind MacKinnon's second, on the power play.
The Pronghorns got into penalty trouble with UBC on a 5-on-3 for well over a minute. The 'Birds took full advantage as MacKinnon one-timed a Shay-Lee McConnell pass across the slot.
UBC took their first lead of the game six minutes into the second when the T-Birds once again found themselves on a 5-on-3 advantage. The puck was worked down low to Mathea Fischer who made a spinning backhand feed to Hannah Clayton-Carroll who re-directed the puck past Alicia Anderson for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
With the 'Birds still up by a goal late into the third, the 'Horns took their timeout with 77 seconds remaining. After winning a defensive zone faceoff, Lethbridge quickly moved up ice in an attempt to find the equalizer which they did just as the game entered its final minute. Micklash denied Tallon Stephenson at the top of the crease but Greig, who was left unattended, pounced on the rebound to force overtime.
With 1:19 remaining in double OT, Breitkreuz found herself on a breakaway but was hauled down from behind giving the Pronghorns forward a chance to seal the victory on a penalty shot. But Micklash was up to the challenge, making the paddle save to prolong the game.
But just 17 seconds later, Lethbridge secured their second win in their last three games with Greig scoring her second of the night as the 'Horns poured onto the ice in celebration.
The extra point for Lethbridge is a huge one for their playoff hopes as they enter Saturday's final regular season meeting with the 'Birds just three points back of UBC for the sixth and final Canada West playoff berth.
That critical matchup is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. PT at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
