Pronghorns drop heartbreaker in double overtime

LETHBRIDGE - In a thrilling double-overtime nail biter, the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves outlasted the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 93-85 to advance to the Canada West quarterfinals.

The Pronghorns found themselves hosting a Canada West playoff game for the second straight year, making it as far as the Canada West Semifinals in 2019.

With the victory, the Timberwolves will make a trip next weekend to Calgary where they will face the top seeded University of Calgary Dinos.

Leading by as many as 15 points in the game, the Pronghorns found themselves in control for the opening 25 minutes of the contest. Down 52-39, a 11-2 Timberwolves run cut the visitors' deficit to just four points. Lethbridge would finish the quarter with a strong last minute of play to take a 58-51 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Timberwolves started the fourth quarter with consecutive baskets, trimming the Pronghorn lead to three, 58-55. An inability to box out would give the Pronghorns an easy two, before UNBC would respond to their blunder with a big three pointer. Down 60-58, the 'Horns would embark on a 8-0 run, thanks in large part to heroics on offense and defense by Asnate Fomina.

Trailing 68-60 with four minutes to play, the Timberwolves would show tremendous grit, responding with a 8-0 run of their own. With the game tied 68-68 with one minute to play, the Pronghorns would call timeout. After a missed three, fourth year forward Emma vanBruinessen would make an incredible drive off the baseline to put the Timberwolves ahead 70-68, their first lead since the opening minutes of the first quarter.

With the 'Horns looking for a spark on offense, it was none other than Kacie Bosch who would take the ball from coast to coast and score on a strong drive to the hoop to tie the game 70-70.

The Timberwolves would be unable to score on the ensuing possession, leading to overtime.

Katie Keith would score the first points of overtime thanks to an offensive rebound, before a steal by Keith would lead to an easy two for the 'Horns. With the 'Horns up 74-70, the Timberwolves would fight back. Madison Landry and Maria Mongomo would lead a UNBC charge to cut the deficit to two, 78-76, with 90 seconds to play in overtime.

With the 'Horns still ahead 78-76 with 15 seconds to play, a foul on Asnate Fomina would send UNBC captain Emily Holmes to the free throw line. Holmes would make both shots, tying the game 78-78. After a Pronghorns miss, they would be called on a foul sending UNBC's Maria Mongomo to the free throw line with six seconds to play. Mongomo would miss both shots, leading to a second overtime.

UNBC would connect on two free throws to open the second overtime, before Jessica Zarowny would tie the game on a lay-in, thanks to a perfect entry pass by Katie Keith. Emily Holmes would respond with a UNBC three, before Zarowny would once again score in the post. A careless turnover by the 'Horns would give UNBC an easy two, putting the visitors ahead 85-82. Amy Mazutinec would tie the game with an incredible three pointer, before Emily Holmes would once again respond for UNBC with the three. Two fouls shots would put the Timberwolves ahead 90-85, resulting in a Pronghorns timeout with a minute to play. Unable to score in the last minute, the 'Horns would see their season come to an end.

The Pronghorns were led by Kacie Bosch with a double-double in her final game, scoring a team high 21 points to go along with 12 boards. Amy Mazutinec chipped in with 19, while Asnate Fomina had 18 in the loss.

UNBC was led by Landry Madison with a game high 30 points, while Canada West leading scorer Maria Mongomo picked up a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Action was fast and furious in the first quarter, as both teams' offenses looked sharp in the early going. With the 'Horns down 11-10, Kacie Bosch and Asnate Fomina would heat up from three-point range. With three consecutive triples from the two seniors, the 'Horns would go ahead 21-11. Out of a UNBC timeout, the visitors would find their footing on defense, fueling a 7-0 run on offense. The Pronghorns would take a 21-18 lead into the second quarter.

The teams would start the second quarter with a 6-6 stretch of play in the opening four minutes of the quarter. With the score 27-24 for Lethbridge, Asnate Fomina would break the deadlock with a deep three pointer, prompting a timeout from UNBC head coach Sergey Shchepotkin.  A 5-0 'Horns run would give the home side their biggest lead of the night, 35-24. A 8-6 end to the quarter in favor of the Pronghorns would see the 'Horns take a 43-30 lead into halftime.

The 'Horns maintained their unrelenting pace to start the third quarter. After shooting 59% in the first half, the Pronghorns continued to find, and make open shots. A 9-9 stretch of play would see Lethbridge maintain their 13 point lead, up 52-39. Just as it seemed that the 'Horns had taken control of the game, cold shooting by Lethbridge would open the door for a 11-2 UNBC run. Led by Mario Mongomo and Emma vanBruinessen, the Timberwolves would cut the deficit to four, 54-50, with two minutes to play in the quarter. A gutsy play at the buzzer by Amy Mazutinec to grab an offensive rebound and finish at the rim would ultimately see the 'Horns take a 58-51 lead into the third quarter.

With the victory, UNBC will move on to the Canada West quarterfinals where they will the number one seed University of Calgary Dinos.

With the loss, the Pronghorns see their season come to an end. The program will look to improve on their result next year, and wish the best to graduating players Kacie Bosch, Katie Keith, and Asnate Fomina.
