Pronghorns drop season finale

CALGARY – Closing out the Canada West season, the Lethbridge Pronghorns scored first but could not hold off the Calgary Dinos, dropping the season finale 3-1.

Thanks to some timely goal scoring, the Dinos closed out the regular season the win and earned a first round bye in the playoffs. Calgary will enjoy a week off to get healthy before embarking on their first postseason since 2016.

Sage Desjardins, Elizabeth Lang, and Taylor Beck did the damage for the Dinos while on the other end it was Kianna Dietz providing the lone goal for the Pronghorns.

The best chance to open the scoring in the first period came on a Lethbridge five-on-three power play. A couple of big shot blocks from the Dinos penalty-killing unit resulted in a deadlocked score through 20 minutes.

The score was finally broken open six minutes into the second period by the Pronghorns. Madison Porter turned on the jets to get by a Dinos defender before crashing the net and leaving an opening for Dietz to jam the puck in.

The Dinos had a quick response to the opening goal when Chelsea Court found Lang all alone for her team-leading 13th tally of the season.

In the third, Desjardins put Calgary on top for good after a shot from Rachel Paul bounced off the backboards and right to her stick. Desjardins shot the puck through the legs of the Lethbridge goaltender Alicia Anderson for the eventual game-winning goal.

Taylor Beck put the game on ice with just under a minute left on a two-on-one with the Pronghorns net vacant.

Calgary goaltender Kelsey Roberts earned her 16th win of the season with a 14-save performance, while Anderson closed out her varsity career with 32 stops in the loss.

The Pronghorns finish the season outside the playoff picture with a 8-16-2-2 record.
