Pronghorns close out season with win over MRU

LETHBRIDGE –On the day of their season finale where they celebrated three graduating seniors, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns used a determined effort to defeat the Mount Royal University Cougars 2-1.
 
Following a defensive first half that saw both teams remain conservative in their play, the Pronghorns broke through with two late goals in the 71st and 82nd minutes to secure their second victory of the season.
 
With the win, the Pronghorns finish their 2021 campaign with a record of 2-9-1, while the Cougars end their season with a record of 3-7-2.
 
Following the game, the Pronghorns celebrated their graduating seniors Colette Mofakham, Erin Gill, and Ellie Kabayama.
 
The first quality scoring chance of the game came at the 23rd minute at the heels of Tory Clements. A pretty passing sequence would see the ball find the right foot of Clements, who would be turned away by a strong challenge from Cougars' keeper Lizzy Knight.
 
The 37th and 41st minutes would feature quality chances from Mount Royal. Activating their midfielders, the Cougars would press into the Pronghorns back line and earn two corner kick chances.
 
The 'Horns would earn the final chance of the half. A deep throw in towards the box would see Lucy Mundy head the ball backwards, with it rolling into the penalty area. A strong run from Grace Taylor would see her challenge the last Cougars defender back, taking a shot that just sailed over the crossbar.
 
The 51st minute would see a Cougars corner kick. Keilyn Stabler would strike a fantastic curling ball that would be turned aside by a sharp play from Pronghorn keeper Erin Gill.
 
The 'Horns would respond with a chance in the 52nd minute, as a left footed strike by Tory Clements would be turned away by the right hand of an extended Lizzy Knight.
 
Lethbridge would break through for the first goal of the game at the 71st minute. An Ellie Kabayama free kick would be headed by two Cougars players before finding the back of the net.
 
The 82nd minute would see the 'Horns double their lead with an unbelievable one touch 37-yard strike from rookie midfielder Drew Dortman following a missed clear by a Cougars defender.
 
The Cougars would find the board in the 87th minute thanks to a fantastic play that would see Sharnae Sedres tap the ball to Janai Martens for an easy strike into an open cage.
 
The Pronghorns would hold off a late push from the Cougars, ending their season with a victory.
