LETHBRIDGE – Following a dramatic finish in their season opener Friday night, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and University of Calgary Dinos once again battled to the final horn, with the Dinos prevailing 76-75.
After the thriller of Friday night, it was inevitable that these teams would be battling right to the end. Tied 60-60 at the mid way point of the fourth quarter, the crowd at the 1
st Choice Savings Center would once again be treated to a frantic finish.
With various contributions from the Pronghorns in the final five minutes, it was Noah Wharton for the Dinos who would keep his team afloat. Three three-pointers from Wharton in the span of 90 seconds would match basket after basket from the Pronghorns. With the score at 74-73 for the 'Horns, Moreau Darlington would draw a foul following a hard drive into the paint. After splitting his charity shots to put the home side up 75-73, it would be rookie guard Aidan Smith of the Dinos who would cash on a three pointer in what would be the game-winning bucket.
The Pronghorns saw valuable contributions across their lineup, with four players recording double digits in points. Shae Gibb would lead the 'Horns with 15 points, dazzling the home crowd on multiple occasions with his crafty ball handing ability. The first quarter saw both teams continue the frenetic pace which defined the action Friday night. Trading baskets in the early stages of the quarter, the 'Horns would please the home crowd with two flashy plays. First, Shae Gibb would send his defender sliding to the hardwood with a spin move and silky finish before Avery Hutcheson would steal the ball in the backcourt and finish with a thunderous dunk.
