LETHBRIDGE – Looking for their first win of the season, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns put forth an inspired effort on both offense and defense to secure a 2-1 victory over the University of Alberta Pandas.
Heading into their seventh game of the year, the Pronghorns had only scored three goals on the year, with Lucy Mundy accounting for two of the three. The 'Horns would almost double their goal tally today, finding contributions from Grace Taylor, and Kaleigh Harris. Mundy and Harris now share the team lead in goals with two a piece.
With the victory, the Pronghorns improve to 1-6-0 on the season, while the Pandas drop to 3-6-0 on the season. A potential sweep of the Pandas would put the Pronghorns in a position to push for third place in the Central division, with a potential wildcard berth available for the third-place finisher.
The Pronghorns would open the scoring in the 7
th minute, thanks to a fantastic play by Pronghorns leading point-getter, Lucy Mundy. Receiving the ball in the midfield, Mundy would take two touches to deliver a high arcing ball to second-year striker Grace Taylor who would make no mistake with the finish.
The 'Horns would continue pressing, with high quality chances in the 14
th and 20
th minutes. Relentless pressure from the Pronghorns front line would force mistakes from the Pandas defenders, leading to these chances.
Despite the Pronghorns dominating the opening half of play, the Pandas would strike in the 37
th minute thanks to a perfectly executed free kick set piece play. Georgia Tansley would cross the ball into the far side of the box where fourth-year forward Brooke Lang would head the ball in to tie the game, 1-1.
Lethbridge would continue with its relentless pressure to open the second half. A fantastic play by Grace Taylor to pressure into the Alberta penalty area would see her poke to the ball free to third-year striker Kaleigh Harris on the left wing. A strike by Harris would be cleared by Pandas defender Cara Lang, after crossing the goal line. With this, the Pronghorns would take a 2-1 lead.
The Pandas would find their footing in the second half, with strong defensive play by the Pronghorns thwarting the potential equalizer. A play in the 79
th minute would see a free kick awarded following a yellow card on the Pronghorns. Second-year keeper Bridie Harding would turn away the chance, as well as another strong chance in the 86
th minute.
The 'Horns would stave off a couple late chances by the Pandas in six minute of stoppage time, securing their first victory of the season.
The teams will run it back tomorrow afternoon at University Community Stadium, with kickoff set for 12PM.
