Pronghorns complete sweep of Cougars

CALGARY – Coming out of the gate firing on all cylinders, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's basketball team cruised to a second consecutive win over the Mount Royal Cougars, 74-48 Saturday night in Calgary.

With the win the Pronghorns improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Cougars drop to 2-4.

Coming off a 13 point performance night the previous evening, Haily Weaver had her most productive game in a Pronghorn jersey, leading all scorers with 24 points and completed the double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds. Jessica Haenni chipped in with 11 points in the win.

A trio of Cougars each scored seven points to tie for the team lead in points in the loss.

After giving up the game's opening point, the Pronghorns exploded for 27 points in the opening quarter and led by 14 points at the first break. In the opening 10 minutes, the Pronghorns shot a scorching 55.6%, hitting 10 of 18 attempts which included six buckets from long range.

Following an even second quarter and a 38-24 lead at the half, the Pronghorn expanded the lead in the third quarter to as many as 24 points before settling for a 19 point lead with 10 minutes to play.

A 12-0 run to start the final quarter by the Pronghorns removed any doubt what the outcome would be on this night and the Pronghorn cruised to the 26-point win.

At the final whistle the Pronghorns hit on 36% from the field and made 10 from long range in their best offensive production of the season. The Pronghorns also won the battle on the glass, out rebounding the Cougars 54-42.

The Cougars shot a cool 26.8% on the night and only hit 3-of-19 shots from behind the arc.

The Pronghorns will close out the first semester of Canada West action next weekend, hosting the MacEwan Griffins Friday and Saturday night.
