EDMONTON – With both teams upping the defensive pressure Saturday night, the Lethbridge Pronghorns couldn't find the buckets when they needed them down the stretch, falling 59-51 to the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton.
Down two points heading into the fourth quarter, the Pronghorns were held to just nine points in the fourth quarter, as they were outscored 15-9 in the final frame.
On the night, the Pronghorns hit just 33% from the floor, while the Pandas were marginally better, shooting just over 35% from the field in the win.
Brianna Fehr once again led the Pandas in scoring, finishing with a game-high 15 points, also adding three rebounds and three assists. Mackenzie Cook added 14, with Claire Signatovich adding 11 for Alberta, who outscored Lethbridge 30-22 in the paint.
Jessica Haenni led the visitors with 14 points, shooting 6/16 from the field, finishing as the only Pronghorn to record double digit points.
The win gives Alberta a 2-0 start to their regular season, while Lethbridge opens with an 0-4 mark.
Lethbridge held a slim 14-11 lead after the opening quarter, with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. A 10-0 Pandas run, however, gave the homeside a 21-14 lead in the second.
Fehr finished the first half with nine points, with Cook and Signatovich each scoring six, as Alberta held a slim 30-26 lead at the half.
Haenni and Fehr traded buckets in the third, with Haenni dropping five of her 14 in the quarter, and Fehr answering with six.
Lethbridge mustered just nine points in the fourth, making just three field goals. Signatovich scored five in the final frame to secure the Alberta win.
The Pronghorns will have the next two weeks off to regroup with having a bye next weekend, before a conference wide week off. The Pronghorns will return to action in Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars November 26
th and 27
th.
