Pronghorns battle back to tie nationally ranked Cougars

LETHBRIDGE – Facing the U SPORTS fourth ranked and Prairie Division leading Mount Royal Cougars, the Lethbridge Pronghorns battled back twice down a goal to earn a 2-2 draw in the second to last conference game of the season.

The tie moves the Pronghorns record to 2-9-2, while the Cougars remain undefeated in the 2022 season at 8-0-4.

Kai Sakaguchi scored both goals for the Pronghorns and now leads the team with five goals on the season. Abel Neisbu opened the scoring for the Cougars and Jonathan Walter picked up the other Mount Royal goal.

Following a cautious start by both teams, Mount Royal had the first threatening chance in 26th minute. Jonathan Walter collected the ball deep in the Pronghorn penalty area and had a good look at goal but Pronghorn keeper Armaan Thawer made a quality diving save.

The Pronghorn had their first quality opportunity less than 10 minutes later, Danilo Morales got his head on a cross, only turned aside by Cougar keeper Sterling Kerr. Pouncing on the rebound, Holden Lehr fired what looked to be a sure goal over the crossbar.

With the game opening up from the slow start, the Prairie Division leading Cougars opened the scoring in the 38th minute. Morbray Beghin found Abel Nesibu on the back post to head home his second goal of the season.

Early in the second half, the Pronghorns pressed forward and were rewarded off of a corner kick. Will Hughes swung the ball to the far post and Thomas Denness headed the ball back across to Kai Sakaguchi for his fourth goal of the season.

Looking like a top team in the country, Mount Royal responded right back to retake the lead. Receiving a well placed ball in the Pronghorn penalty area, Jonathan Walter tapped home his second of the season in 51st minute.

Not going away quietly, the Pronghorns tied the game back up in the 63rd minute. Midfielder Holden Lehr cut the ball back across to the net to Sakaguchi, who one-timed home his second of the match.

At full time, the Cougars held a slight advantage in shot attempts, 15 to 12, the Pronghorns registered eight shots on goal compared to the Cougars five.

The Pronghorns will conclude the 2022 Canada West regular season next weekend, hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday afternoon. Mount Royal has two game remaining next weekend, hosting the Alberta Golden Bears and MacEwan Griffins
