Slobodian leads Pronghorns to win over Winnipeg

LETHBRIDGE – Closing out the Canada West regular season for both teams, the Lethbridge Pronghorns exploded for four first half goals enroute to a 6-1 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen.

After being shutout the previous five games, the six goal output was the best of the season and was the first time the program had registered more than four goals in a game since the 2017 season when the Pronghorns beat the Fraser Valley Cascades 5-0.

The win is the first of the year for the Pronghorns and will see their 2022 season record conclude at 1-11-2. The Wesmen's record with the loss, drops to 1-12-1.

Sophomore striker Hailey Slobodian put on a first half show, scoring all four goals, while Tory Clements and Alexis Bradford scored second half goals. Jazmyn Castor scored the lone Wesmen goal.

In the ninth minute the Pronghorns opened the scoring. Sprung by a Tory Clements pass, Pronghorn leading scorer Hailey Slobodian raced on to the ball and eluded Winnipeg keeper Madison Priebe, slotting home her fifth of the season into a wide-open net.

The Wesmen, looking to respond, had their first quality chance in the 15th minute. Madisyn Furber found herself wide open on the right flank, but senior keeper Erin Gill made a strong diving save to keep the Wesmen off the board.

Clements and Slobodian teamed up again in the 25th minute to double the Pronghorns lead. Slobodian took a pass at the top of the box and bounced a shot into the low left corner for her second goal of the half.

Winnipeg had another quality opportunity in the 32nd minute, Grace Klassen's long-range shot, which beat Gill but clanked off the crossbar. However, the Wesmen would cut the Pronghorn lead in half only four minutes later.

Furber swung the ball into the Pronghorn penalty area and Jazmyn Castor was able to get a head on the cross and past Gill for her third goal of the season.

The Pronghorns would answer right back with two goals in only two minutes. Anneke De Klerk fed Slobodian dead in the Wesmen penalty area for her hattrick, followed by Clements and Slobodian connecting for the third time leading to Slobodian's fourth goal of the half.

From a set piece early in the second half, the Pronghorns increased the lead to 5-1. Slobodian fed the ball to the far post and Kaleigh Harris's header back across the goal found a wide open Tory Clements for a tap in.

As the game was nearing full time, first-year midfielder Alexis Bradford rounded out the scoring with her first career goal.
