Horns frigid start freezes offence

Vikes even weekend series

Following a stunning upset against the defending Canada West champions, the University of Victoria Vikes, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns found themselves overwhelmed 88-60 in the rematch.

Following a first half that saw the 'Horns outscored by 26 points, an impressive third quarter saw Lethbridge outscore Victoria 32-17, re-finding the form that allowed them to upset the preseason favourites in the opener Friday night.

However, the Vikes showcased their championship mettle, overwhelming the Pronghorns once again in the fourth quarter with an overwhelming pace in transition, and a stifling defensive effort. Outscoring the home side 25-8, while outrebounding them by eight, the Vikes ultimately prevailed 88-60 thanks to a dominant fourth quarter.

The Pronghorns were led by a 14-point, 12 rebound double-double from Jeff Rodehutskors, while Shae Gibb and Jack-Henry Fox-Grey chipped in 12 and 11 a piece.

The Vikes were led by a phenomenal 31 point, 12 of 16 shooting performance from Diego Maffia. Dominick Oliveri added a 12-point, 16 rebound double-double while Elias Ralph, and Renoldo Robinson added 15, and 11 points a piece.

The Vikes would start the game hungry to prove their status as the top ranked team in Canada West preseason polling. Victoria would run their offense through their superstars early, as Diego Maffia and Elias Ralph would combine for the first 15 points of the game. The Pronghorns would be stifled by the Vikes defense, managing a measly three points in the quarter, shooting 1 of 16. The Vikes would take a 22-3 lead into the second quarter.

The Pronghorns would continue to struggle to contain the potent Vikes offense in the second quarter. However, Lethbridge would find success on the offensive glass, securing seven offensive rebounds in the quarter. The 'Horns would take two more shot attempts in the quarter as a result buts find themselves victim to seven Victoria blocks. The Vikes would take a 46-20 lead into halftime.

Despite a third quarter that saw the Pronghorns return to their Friday form, the Vikes used their championship experience to dominate the fourth quarter and ultimately earn a weekend split.

The Pronghorns will travel to Langley next weekend to face the Trinity Western University Spartans, while the Vikes will return home to face the Winnipeg Wesmen
