LETHBRIDGE – In what has grown to become a regular occurrence at the University of Lethbridge, 2021/2022 was another exceptional year in the classroom for Pronghorn student athletes.

Every year, U SPORTS honors student athletes who excel in sport at the University level, while maintaining an 80% average in academics, as U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians.

With 177 athletes listed on eligibility certificates for their respective U SPORTS & Canada West seasons, 75 of those achieved Academic All-Canadian status in 2021/202. Equalling an outstanding 42% of student athletes eligible for the award.

This is an incredible accomplishment considering the amount of time student-athletes commit to their training and competitions.

"The reality of being a student athlete is not glamorous as many would believe. It is a daily grind of balancing personal life, academic achievement and the pursuit of sport. It is not for the faint of heart and to succeed academically as an Academic All-Canadian is a remarkable accomplishment" says Neil Langevin, Executive Director of Pronghorn Athletics.

"I'm proud of these Pronghorns and appreciative of all the support that those at the University of Lethbridge have provided to help them."

Pronghorn Athletics is also thrilled to be finally returning to recognizing these student athletes and community leaders' in-person, following 2 years of virtual acknowledgement due to provincial restrictions.

This year's event is being hosted on campus and in the Science Commons Atrium for the first time, which has played host to some of the University's most significant events in recent years.

Presenting this year's recipients were outgoing President Mike Mahon, Vice President Nancy Walker, Associate Vice President Kathleen Massey, Dean of Education Robin Bright, and SEARS Executive Director & Registrar Natasha Buis Deering.

Within the 75 student athlete's who achieved Academic All-Canadian status, Women's Soccer led the way for the Pronghorn Athletics with 15 recognized. Women's Rugby followed with a total 12 athlete's awarded, while Women's Basketball were right behind with 11.

For Women's Basketball, their 11 total represented just over 85% of their athletes listed on the eligibility certificate, a remarkable percentage. Finishing with one less than Women's Basketball was Men's Soccer, whose 10-award winners had also been one of their most successful years.

Track & Field followed next with the men and women's teams equally having 8 athletes recognized. Men's & Women's swim mimicked their championship sport counterparts with also splitting an equal number of 4 student athletes per gender.

And Men's Basketball rounded out the prestigious year for Pronghorn Athletics with adding 2 athletes to the total.

Since the inception of the All-Canadian program in 1990, a total of 1,371 Pronghorn varsity athletes have been named Academic All-Canadians.
