CALGARY – A night after beating the Calgary Dinos for the first time since 2010 and down nine points with just over four minutes to play, the Lethbridge Pronghorns rallied late to keep their win streak going and earn the weekend sweep of the Dinos with a 71-70 win.
Trailing 68-59, guard Jessica Haenni hit a three-pointer to kick start a 12-2 run to close the game and at worst clinched second spot in the Central Division. The Pronghorns' record improves to 10-4 and now set their sights on top spot with two games remaining.
With the sweep, to push the win streak to 10 games and an Alberta Pandas loss Friday night, the Pronghorns are now tied with the Pandas for the top spot in the division with 10 wins. The Pandas have two games in hand but travel to Lethbridge next week to face the Pronghorns. The Pandas will host the Calgary Dinos to wrap up the regulars season the following weekend.
The loss drops the Dinos to 7-7 on the season and sit in third place, three games clear of the Mount Royal Cougars.
Haenni had another strong night offensively for the Pronghorns, scoring 21 points for the second consecutive night to lead all scorers. Danielle Nadeau and Millay Johnson came off the bench to chip in with 11 points apiece.
May Proctor led the Dinos with 14 points, while Annacy Palmer picked up 11 points.
The game was a toe-to-toe contest for the entire four quarters. The Dinos led much of the way, but the Pronghorns always remained in striking distance. The Dinos jumped out to a 20-12 lead after one quarter, only to see the Pronghorns claw back to go into halftime knotted at 34.
With a 17-13 third quarter, the Dinos looked close out the game in the final frame but Jessica Haenni and the Pronghorns had other ideas.
The Pronghorns will host the Alberta Pandas next Friday and Saturday in a battle for top spot in the Central Division.
