Pronghorns work the glass in win over MacEwan

EDMONTON – While it wasn't one to write home about, the Lethbridge Pronghorns completed the first task of two this week to complete the regular season, with an 84-70 win over the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton.

Playing on a rare Thursday night to make up the first of two games postponed from February 4th and 5th, the Pronghorns took one step closer to clinching third place in the Central Division and improved to 7-8 on the season. With a win tomorrow, the Pronghorns will finish third in the division and have a first-round bye in the Canada West playoff tournament.

The Griffins remain winless on the Canada West season, falling to 0-15.

Both teams will conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon, tip-off is slated for 2:00 pm in Edmonton. Catch the all the action on www.canadawest.tv.

Big men Chad Oviatt and Jeff Rodehutskors had a field day in the paint, with both registering double-doubles in the win. Oviatt, who is playing in his final season with the Pronghorns, led all scorers with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Rodehutskors picked up 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Colton Halbersma led the Griffins with 18 points and Damilola Osuma chipped in with 10 points.

Despite struggling with consistency at the offensive end floor, the difference tonight was the Pronghorns ability to win the battle on the glass. The Pronghorns outrebounded the Griffins 57-36, including grabbing 19 offensive boards, leading to much need extra possessions for the Pronghorns.

30 of the Pronghorns 84 points came via second chance opportunities.

On the night, the Pronghorns shot 38% from the field and had a tough night from behind the arc, only hitting on 5 of 22 shots from long range. While the Griffins shot a respectable 44% from the field but their inability to make shots from the charity stripe was another deciding factor in the result with MacEwan only hitting at a 45.8% clip.

The Pronghorns opened a 24-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and just when it looked like the Pronghorns would take control of another game against the Griffins, the home side was able to cut the lead to only nine at the break.

In December the Pronghorns swept MacEwan in Lethbridge with 42 and 27 point wins.

In the third quarter, the Pronghorns were able to build the lead to as many as 18 points but allowed the Griffins to continue to hang around and the margin hoovered between 18 and 12 points until the final buzzer.
