LETHBRIDGE – Squaring off in a game that was to happen two weekends ago, the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Fraser Valley Cascades battled to a 1-1 tie at the Community Sports Field in Lethbridge.
The Pronghorns and Cascades were supposed to face each other in Abbotsford on September 11
th but the game was postponed due to poor air quality due to wildfires.
The tie keeps both teams in search of their first win of the season, with the Pronghorns record moving to 0-4-2 and the Cascades seeing their record go to 0-1-5.
Casacade Halle McCambley opened the scoring late in the first half and Tory Clements responded for the Pronghorns with a goal in the second half.
With both teams playing their third game in four days, the unique Tuesday night match up saw a tentative start with each team only generating one quality chance in the opening 20 minutes.
The Pronghorns faced UBCO and Thompson Rivers at home last weekend, while the Cascades were forced into a three-game road swing, starting in Saskatchewan to face the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies.
In the 25
th minute, the Cascades came dangerously close to opening the scoring. Jenna Mele was at the right spot on the far post for a ball played across the box but her volley went wide.
Fraser Valley continued to push forward offensively, however the Pronghorns defensive structure was able to limit the quality chances for the Cascades.
As the first half enter the final five minutes, the Pronghorns put together a solid sequence leading to a strong shot from just outside the penalty area from Alexis Bradford. Cascade keeper Joven Sandu was in perfect spot to stop the Bradford shot and then made a more difficult save only minutes later off of Hailey Slobodian.
The Cascades did break the deadlock prior to half time. Sofia Faremo swung the ball into the Pronghorn penalty area in from a free kick and Halle McCambley jumped on a loose ball to poke home her second goal of the season.
Similar to the start of the first half, the second half was cautious on both fronts and quality chances were scarce in the early going.
McCambley had two dangerous chances in the 58
th minute, receiving a back door pass and getting off two shots, one stopped by Pronghorn keeper Bridie Harding and the other finding the outside of the post.
Harding got the best of McCambley again in the 67
th minute, moving off her line to challenge a wide open McCambley, making a sliding save to keep the game with in one goal.
Looking to find the equalizer, the Pronghorns had the next good chance offensively. Slobodian found Bradford high in the penalty area, but Bradford couldn't find the mark, missing high and wide right.
Forcing as turnover deep the Cascades end, Pronghorn midfielder Tory Clements was a beneficiary of the turnover, finding herself with space to slot home her first of the season to tie the game.
The Pronghorns weathered a Cascade storm over the final five minutes, defending four corner kicks to earn their second point of the weekend.
The Pronghorns will remain at home this coming weekend, hosting the MacEwan Griffins and Alberta Pandas, Saturday and Sunday respectively. Fraser Valley will return home to host the UBCO Heat and Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
