Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#1 Ranked Cougars take down Pronghorns in weekend series

The No. 1-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team held on for wins this weekend over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport in Regina.

Friday night saw the Cougars take off early, opening up an eventual 12-point lead early in the second quarter, but the Horns closed the half on a 13-2 run to cut Regina's lead to 37-36 at the break. Lethbridge continued to give the Cougars trouble in the third quarter, and Tobore Okome's three-point play at the buzzer tied the game 50-50 heading into the fourth.

Another three-point play by Okome tied it up at 53-53 early in the fourth, but Zoe Hartmann hit triples on back-to-back possessions to give the Cougars the lead for good. A theme that became common throughout the weekend, the Horns kept grinding away and eventually made it a four-point game with three minutes to go, but that turned out to be the last field goal of the game for either team.

Dayna Pearce hit a pair of free throws for the Cougars put them up six, and Jade Belmore's free throw in the final minute made it a three-possession game and all but sealed the win for the Regina.

Hailey Weaver lead the Horns in scoring with 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Danielle Nadeau scored double-digit points with 10, and added 3 rebounds.

Saturday night saw a bit more offence from both teams, and for the Cougars, they were led by an impressive 33 points from Jade Belmore.

The two teams played an entertaining, tightly fought contest which at no point was more than a two-possession game for either side. Lethbridge ran out to an early 21-19 lead after the first quarter, and held that lead into the break at 37-35. Coming out of the half, the Cougars and Pronghorns continue to take shots back and forth, and headed into the final period all tied up at 66-66.

Jessica Haenni's bucket with just over three minutes to go put the Pronghorns up by four at 72-68, but that would be Lethbridge's final points of the game. Regina closed the game on a 9-0 run including a Zoe Hartmann bucket, and then seven consecutive points by Belmore.

Belmore's mid-range jumper with just under a minute to go put Regina on top and she hit three more free throws in the dying seconds to seal the win.

Lethbridge returns home this weekend to face the MacEwan Griffins this Friday & Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 6PM Friday & 5PM Saturday.
