Cougars chase down 'Horns in weekend set

The Lethbridge Pronghorns opened the second half of their season with back-to-back defeats at the hands of the Mount Royal Cougars this past weekend. The losses drop the 'Horns to 4-8 on the season, and just outside of the playoff picture with 8 games remaining.

Mount Royal took an early lead Friday night and held on for the 84-75 win despite the 'Horns coming back from a 22 point deficit.
 
Tag Layton was a star for Lethbridge in the loss, with a roar from the crowd every time he touched the ball. Layton finished the night with nine points, four rebounds and three assists in the loss. 
 
Kymani Pollard joined Layton & Jeff Rodehutskors to lead the Pronghorns, putting up 12 points on 50 per cent shooting. Rodehutskors finished the night as the leader on the stat sheet with 15 points and five rebounds. 
 
Even though Lethbridge picked up in the third, MRU threw down. Three dunks in three minutes, two from Kevointe Watts and a third from Mawien Mawien. 
 
Holt Tomie & Kevointe Watts led the cougars, with Tomie putting up 18 points, five rebounds and nine assists, while Watts ended the night with 16, two and four. 
 
Saturday night was much of the same for the Cougars with Tomie and Watta leading the way. The duo combined for more than 50 per cent of MRU's points in the match-up; Tomie had  22 points accompanied with seven rebounds and five assists on 62 per cent shooting. While Watts put up 26 points, throwing down two dunks in the second half to bring the crowd to its feet.
 
Mawien Mawien, Daniel Mulder and Ijah Nelson had nine pointns a piece, assisting their strong defensive play. 
 
On the Pronghorn side, Jeff Rodehutskors had another impressive performance securing 19 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Shae Gibb and Tag Layton chipped in with 15 and 14 points respectively,
 
The 'Horns return home next weekend to face the Saskatchewan Huskies, tip-off slated for 8:00PM Friday and 7:00PM Saturday.
