Pronghorns fall to Cougars in weekend series

Opening the 2023 portion of their schedule, the Lethbridge Pronghorns fell in back-to-back games to the MRU Cougars, 72-62 on Saturday and 62-57 on Friday. The losses push the Pronghorns to a 5-7 record on the campaign.

The Cougars carried momentum from their Friday night win into Saturday's competition, and picked up right where they left off. Jordan Blaskin paced Mount Royal, opening the scoring with five quick baskets. Alongside Blaskin, teammate Madison Hooper scored 14 points, grabbing three rebounds.

Haily Weaver was a driving force for the Pronghorns once again on Saturday, finding space all over the front court and adding 14 to the board. Danielle Nadeau also kicked off her second half in style, finishing Saturday night with 15 and seven rebounds.

Jessica Haenni chipped in with 7 points and 4 rebounds in the loss.

Lethbridge had a better showing tonight despite the score, finding lanes to rush the rim and take easier lay-up opportunities compared to being held deep last night.

Blaskin was named player of the game for Mount Royal, with 17 points, three rebounds and 43 per cent shooting, 57 per cent from two.

Friday night was much of the same for the Pronghorns, with Tobore Okome & Kyra Collier leading the team offensively.

Collier scored 19 points on 7 of 13 from the field, and chipping in with a 3 ball. Okome was a presence down low scoring an efficient 15 points on 7 of 10 from the field. Okome finished just 1 rebound shy of a double-double on the evening.

Madison Hooper paced the cougars and finished the night with 11 points, while Megan Wellinghurst and Jenessa Ramsoomair combined for 18 points, with Tanis Metcalfe putting up 14 of her own.

Lethbridge is back home next weekend as they host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Game times are 6PM on Friday and 5PM on Saturday.
