Wesmen defeat Pronghorns in Hard Fought Battle

POST GAME
LETHBRIDGE - In a riveting clash at the University of Lethbridge Gymnasium, the stage was set for a rematch between the Pronghorns and the fifth-ranked University of Winnipeg Wesmen. The Wesmen emerged victorious in Friday's opener, securing a narrow three-point win over the Pronghorns. Though the Horns have yet to win a Canada West matchup this season, the Pronghorns proved that they can compete with anyone, going toe-to-toe with Winnipeg on both nights despite coming short in both games over the weekend.

BREAKDOWN
  • Less than five minutes into the game, Pronghorns Head Coach, Kenny Otieno set the tone, calling a timeout as the Winnipeg Wesmen took an early eight-point lead to start the game. In the final moments of the quarter, Noah Kankam's foul opened the door for Kymani Pollard, who secured two crucial foul shots, narrowing the deficit to 10.
  • Two minutes into the second quarter, Parker Flemming's three-pointer gave the Horns a push, bringing the score to 35-21. Jack-Henry Fox-Grey showcased his skills with an impressive eleventh point, executing a hook over a Winnipeg defender and bringing the game within four points. This followed his standout 25-point performance on Friday night.
  • Kymani Pollard's fast-break layup, combined with Brady Baines' steal and subsequent layup, compelled the Wesmen to call a timeout, as their lead shrank to six. Shawn Maranan responded with precision, sinking a three-pointer. Donald Stewart contributed with several successful baskets, expanding Winnipeg's lead. A foul by Sebastian Perez sent Stewart to the line, and one successful shot re-established a 13-point lead for the Wesmen.
  • In the final minute of play, Pollard maneuvered through the defense for a layup. However, as the first half concluded, the score stood at 49-38 in favor of the Wesmen. Winnipeg's dominance was evident in the first-half stats, shooting an impressive 50 percent from beyond the arc going 8-16, while Lethbridge struggled from beyond the arc, earning only 2-12 attempts from three.
  • Kymani Pollard set to improve the stats in the second half, coming out of half time playing to win, earning back-to-back threes for the Pronghorns, but with three-point makes from Shawn Maranan and Alberto Gordo the Horns were unable to make up much ground in the deficit, and the third quarter ended 69-57.
  • The Pronghorns continued to push the pace of play but were unable to get shots to fall as the fourth quarter progressed. Alberto Gordo hit a deep three-point shot from the top of the key with five minutes left in the game to stretch the lead to 14, forcing the Horns to call a time out.
  • As time counted down in the fourth quarter, Kymani Pollard continued to look to break down the defense, earning a number of layups for the Pronghorns, but on the other end, the Wesmen were relentless, as Emmanuel Thomas earned basket from inside the paint to keep the Horns out of reach. Thomas added two more points off foul shot opportunities and the Wesmen finished the game victorious, 86-74.
