Horns sweep Wesmen with 96-62 victory at home

POST GAME
LETHBRIDGE – With a decisive 96-62 win at the University of Lethbridge Gymnasium, the Pronghorns completed the weekend sweep against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. Vlada Hozalova led the Horns in scoring on Saturday night with 18 points, going 4-8 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Pronghorns shot an impressive 46 percent from three, while Winnipeg struggled to get a break from three-point territory, shooting only 14 percent. Anna Kernaghan led the Wesmen in the game two matchup, scoring 16 points, and contributing five assists and four steals.

BREAKDOWN
  • In the first quarter, Piper Dobbelsteyn and Raia Guinto traded three-point makes, keeping the game close and proving themselves as shooters in back-to-back games. This time, Anna Kernaghan and Tana Layton added to the three-point scoring for the Wesmen in the first quarter, as they looked to improve on their 12 percent shooting performance the previous night, as they went 4-33 on Friday. The Horns' 31 percent three-point percentage on Friday night, helped them earn the 68-44 against the Wesmen. Vlada Hozalova nailed a three-point shot with 26 seconds left in the quarter, putting the Horns up 23-20 going into the second.
  • In the second quarter, the Pronghorns went on a run, extending their lead to 10. Abby Graves was relentless on the offensive boards, creating second chance opportunities for the Horns. Good ball movement for the Horns, created an open three-point opportunity for Jenessa Doctor, which she made court for the home team.
  • Raia Guinto pulled up from the top of the key in the face of the Pronghorn defender in the final minute of play in the first half, bringing the Lethbridge lead within eight points, but on the other end Vlada Hozalova and Kamryn DeKlerk both took turns breaking down the defence to earn layups and the Horns finished the quarter up 12.
  • The Pronghorns continued their strong shooting performance in the third quarter, with Dobbelsteyn, Hovalova and DeKlerk each making it count from beyond the arc for Lethbridge. Winnipeg couldn't find the bottom of the basket on the other end, and the Pronghorns were able to extend their lead to 23 before Anna Kernaghan made it count from three-point territory for the Wesmen.
  • Despite Winnipeg Wesmen sending the double team to guard to Tobore Okome in the paint, Okome continued to find a way make layups over the hands of the Winnipeg defender. On the defensive end, Okome did not give the opposition the same grace, coming up big with a block against Winnipeg's Sarah Boitson.
  • The Pronghorns entered the fourth quarter with a decisive 67-46 lead, and as the quarter progressed, the Wesmen continued to struggle to find a way to shut down Tobore Okome.
  • A number of Pronghorn fouls gave the Wesmen several opportunities at the line to make up ground, but both Jennifer Kallon and Raia Guinto split on their opportunities at the line.
  • Jenessa Doctor and Abby Graves went on a scoring run for the Horns deep in the fourth quarter, adding to their lead to finish the game 96-62 and complete the weekend sweep of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. Adding two wins in week three, the Pronghorns record moved to 3-3.
