Haenni & Weaver shine for the Horns on senior night

LETHBRIDGE – In their final home game of the 2022-2023 U SPORTS season, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the MacEwan University Griffins 80-61, with the boisterous support of the fans at the 1st Choice Savings Center.

The story of the game would be Jessica Haenni and Haily Weaver, the two graduating Pronghorn seniors, who would put on a show for the hometown crowd in the final home game of their USPORTS careers. Graduating alongside Jessica and Haily is Jessica Zarowny, a longtime staple of the Pronghorn Women's Basketball Program.

Weaver would record 27 points and 8 rebounds in their Pronghorn finale, shooting a phenomenal 10 of 18 from the field. Haenni would chip in a steady 23 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists while converting on all nine of her free throw attempts.

The Pronghorns currently sit tied for the twelfth and final playoff spot with the UNBC Timberwolves. The Timberwolves defeated the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack tonight to maintain their position in the standings.

With the win, Lethbridge improves to 7-11 on the season, while MacEwan falls to 2-16.

The Griffins were led by 25 points and 7 rebounds from Mackenzie Farmer, while Mikah Reed supported with 18 points of her own.

Both teams struggled with shooting the ball in the early stages of the first quarter, relying on attacking the rim to earn trips to the foul line. After the Griffins opened a 7-2 lead, Lethbridge would respond with a 17-8 run to close the quarter leading 19-15. The 'Horns would finish the quarter shooting at a 30% clip (6 of 20), while the Griffins shot 36% (5 of 14).

The first five minutes of the second quarter would see the Pronghorns embark on a 16-6 run, highlighted by five different scorers contributing to the run. The 'Horns would shoot an efficient 8 for 11 during this run, while forcing five MacEwan turnovers and limiting the Griffins to 1 of 8 from the field.  A 7-0 stretch from the Griffins would trim the Pronghorn lead to seven, 35-28.

The teams would finish the quarter trading baskets as Lethbridge would head into the half leading 45-35.

MacEwan would start the third quarter with a 11-5 run, led by nine points from second year guard Mikah Reed. With the Griffins trailing by only four, 54-50, the Pronghorns would turn to Jessica Haenni to reignite their offense. The graduating senior would score nine of the Pronghorns' next eleven points pacing Lethbridge to a 63-56 lead after three quarters.

A strong fourth quarter by the Pronghorns would see Lethbridge secure the victory on senior night.

The Pronghorns will travel up the QE2 next weekend to wrap up their regular season against the University of Alberta Pandas. The Griffins will travel east to face the University of Regina  Cougars.
