Strong Third Quarter Lifts Pronghorns to Comeback Victory

LETHBRIDGE - As the evening got snowier and slicker, the University of Lethbridge celebrated Indigenous Community Night. The visiting MRU Cougars struggled after losing both of their road games in Winnipeg last weekend, following a strong 4-0 start to their season. Meanwhile, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns entered the game undefeated at 4-0, coming off two victories, including one where they scored over 100 points. With their momentum, the Pronghorns were eager to extend their winning streak. After a thrilling comeback led by star point guard Angelo Mbituyimana, the Pronghorns secured a dramatic victory over the Cougars in a game to remember.

Q1
  • The early moments caught the Pronghorns off guard, as they quickly committed two fouls, sending Mount Royal to the free-throw line.
  • However, Lethbridge responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Karter Fry and Shae Gibb, giving the Horns a 1-point lead midway through the quarter.
  • MRU started to take control towards the end of the first, pulling ahead by 8 points as the quarter came to a close.
Q2
  • Angelo Mbituyimana opened the scoring for Lethbridge with a strong driving layup, sparking the Pronghorns after a shaky start to the second quarter.
  • Mount Royal's Dray Walburger showed dominance with explosive dribbling, continually causing problems for the Horns' defence. The Pronghorns struggled to contain MRU's high-flying offense.
  • By halftime, the Cougars were firmly in control, holding a significant lead. The break gave Lethbridge a chance to regroup and figure out how to address their offensive struggles.
Q3
  • Lethbridge came out strong after halftime, forcing Mount Royal into two quick fouls. Jack Henry Fox-Grey hit a clutch 3-pointer early, energizing the Pronghorns.
  • The Horns then executed a fast break, with Kymani Pollard assisting Fox-Grey, who converted an and-one play. Fox-Grey followed it up with a huge perimeter block, which led to another fast break and a score from Mbituyimana.
  • After hard work and defensive intensity, Lethbridge finally took their first lead of the game after another Fox-Grey score. He had put up 12 points in just the first 7 minutes of the quarter.
  • A deep, contested 3-pointer by Shae Gibb extended the Pronghorns' lead to 5 points, and the Cougars had no answer for the Horns' sudden surge.
Q4
  • Lethbridge came out firing in the final frame. Lu Dalil opened the quarter with a massive dunk over an MRU defender. On the next possession, Kymani Pollard followed with a deep 3-pointer, sending the University of Lethbridge into a frenzy.
  • The Pronghorns maintained their composure as they began to pull away. Another 3-pointer from Karter Fry brought the crowd to its feet.
  • With the game winding down, Pollard sealed the victory with a steal and a dunk, capping off a remarkable comeback. The Horns had fought back from an early deficit, showing resilience and heart in an incredible turnaround.
  • As the game ended, the final score was Pronghorns 88, Cougars 67. In a game no one saw coming, the Pronghorns showed immense grit and determination to overcome a significant deficit and secure the win. With stellar performances from Angelo Mbituyimana, Jack Henry Fox-Grey, Kymani Pollard and Shae Gibb, Lethbridge's comeback was a statement victory to start the weekend.
