LETHBRIDGE – Pronghorn Athletics is excited to announce the achievements of the 2023-24 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians. This year, once again, U SPORTS has recognized the exceptional student-athletes who have reached the highest levels of achievement in their sport, while maintaining an impressive academic record of 80% or higher.
Despite the challenges posed by busy schedules, travel commitments and intense competition, Pronghorn student-athletes have continued to thrive, with 52 individuals earning the prestigious title of Academic All-Canadian. This remarkable group represents a testament to both their athletic prowess and academic dedication.
This year's 52 Academic All-Canadians represent a significant achievement for Pronghorn Athletics. Notably, these athletes make up nearly 40% of the varsity student-athletes at the University of Lethbridge. Their hard work, determination and ability to balance the demands of post-secondary athletics and their studies have set a new standard for academic excellence.
The outstanding student-athletes who earn this distinction not only excel in their respective sports but also achieve academic success in various undergraduate and graduate degrees across fields such as arts, science, business and education, reflecting the strength and breadth of their academic achievements.
To recognize the hard work and dedication of these exceptional student-athletes, Pronghorn Athletics is proud to offer the Deb Steacy Academic All-Canadian Scholarship Fund, which will distribute a total of $15,000 among the 2023-24 honourees. This scholarship is named in honour the legacy of Deb Steacy, a former student-athlete and long-time supporter of Pronghorn Athletics and a champion of academic achievement. The fund is an important way to acknowledge the efforts of our student-athletes and to provide continued support for their educational goals.
"We incredibly proud to celebrate the 52 student-athletes who have earned the prestigious title of U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian this year. These athletes have demonstrated a level of commitment and discipline that goes beyond the playing field, balancing the demands of varsity athletics with exceptional academic performance. To maintain an 80% average while competing at the highest level of university sport is no small feat and these student-athletes truly embody the values of hard work, perseverance and excellence," said Spencer Pommells, Athletic Director of Pronghorn Athletics.
The 2023-24 class of Academic All-Canadians continues the tradition of excellence within Pronghorn Athletics. Since the inception of the program in 1990, more than 1,480 Pronghorn student-athletes have received this honour and each year, student-athletes raise the bar for future generations.
To celebrate their remarkable achievements, Pronghorn Athletics will host an Academic All-Canadian Dinner on December 6 in the University of Lethbridge Science Commons Atrium. This special event will honour the 2023-24 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians, recognizing their dedication to both their academic and athletic pursuits.
