Pronghorns Look to Bounce Back in Saturday Rematch After Tough Loss to Pandas

LETHBRIDGE – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's basketball team faced a challenging test against the University of Alberta Pandas on Friday evening, falling 81-49. The Pandas came out strong, using sharp shooting and disciplined defense to quickly build a commanding lead. Despite the significant deficit, the Pronghorns showed resilience and determination, fighting until the final buzzer.

Team captain and Mint Smart Wash Player of the Game, Kyra Collier, was a standout for the Pronghorns, leading the way with an impressive performance. Shooting 45 percent from the field, Collier was a consistent presence on the court, driving the Pronghorns' efforts throughout the game. Reflecting on what worked well despite the loss, Collier pointed to the team's ball movement and their ability to make the Pandas' defense rotate.

"I think what went well is we were moving the ball from side to side, making their defense rotate. That's when we found our most success," Collier said.

Looking ahead to Saturday's rematch, Collier emphasized the need for a more intense and focused effort, particularly on defence.

"I think continuing to bring our intensity into the second half is key. We came in a little flat, and that's when they got their lead. Also, we need to find shooters and contest their shots better," Collier added.

Head Coach Dave Waknuk also shared his thoughts on what the team can improve after Friday's tough loss to a strong opponent.

"I think we started well, and I liked the way we defended early on. We came out with the right energy, but then it started to fade in the third and fourth quarters. Our defensive intensity and physicality diminished as fatigue set in, and we rushed our decision-making. They did a good job controlling the game with their ball pressure and defensive intensity, which led us to rush things. We weren't as deliberate, and that affected the outcome," Waknuk explained.

Despite the large deficit, Coach Waknuk praised his team's ability to continue competing and seeking positives, even when the game seemed out of reach.

"With these back-to-back games, you're always looking for something that can help you for the next day. Maybe you find something that works late, something to carry into tomorrow's game. There's still strategy and effort involved, and you always want to play tough, regardless of the score. I'm not surprised that our team battled through it—that's exactly what I expect from them, given their character and who they are," Waknuk said.

The Pronghorns are determined to bounce back in Saturday's rematch as they look to split the weekend series against a strong Alberta team. Fans can expect another spirited effort as the Pronghorns continue their push for the playoffs and seek greater consistency in conference play.
