Pronghorns Battle to Overtime in Thrilling Finale, But Wesmen Prevail 97-88 to Close Regular Season

LETHBRIDGE – After a 23-point loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's basketball team was able to keep it closer in the rematch Saturday night. In fact, the hosts drove it right to overtime and did it with some last second dramatics. Though the Wesmen eventually prevailed in the five minutes of extra time with a 97-88 win to finish the season at 16-4 while the Pronghorns end the regular season at 11-9, the hosts made their final regular season home stand and adrenaline inducer. With .7 seconds left on the clock and the Horns down 82-80, Lethbridge's Kymani Pollard drew a foul on a last-second drive that had the University of Lethbridge in hysterics and drained both shots to force OT. The Wesmen quickly separated themselves in the extra frame, opening up a 92-85 lead on a three-pointer from Shawn Maranan, who finished the night with 33 points, en route to the win. It looked as though the Wesmen would decide the game in regular time when Maranan hit for two free throws to put the Wesmen up 82-77 with 56 seconds to go. A three-pointer from Pronghorn Angelo Mbituyimana with 44 seconds to go pulled the hosts to within two before Pollard's clutch touch at the free throw line with less than a second to go forced overtime.
