LETHBRIDGE – Few student-athletes embody the spirit of discipline, passion and perseverance quite like Hailey Slobodian. A leader on the Pronghorns women's soccer team and a standout in the classroom, Hailey graduates from the University of Lethbridge as the recipient of the prestigious Governor General's Silver Medal – awarded to the student who achieves the highest academic standing in a four-year Bachelor degree program.

It's one of the most distinguished academic honours in Canada – and a reflection of Hailey's unwavering commitment to excellence in every area of university life.

"Receiving the Governor General's Silver Medal assures me that not skipping the 9 a.m. class after a 6 a.m. soccer practice was a good choice," she shared. "Being both a student and an athlete doesn't leave much time for anything else. To excel in both areas, I had to give up a lot of the 'fun stuff.' This medal reminds me it was all worth it."

Hailey's Pronghorn journey is at the heart of her university experience, a journey that taught her more than just how to compete.

"Being a Pronghorn was the most influential part of my time at ULethbridge," she said. "As a student-athlete, you have a completely different university experience. Rushing to practice after class, traveling every other weekend during season and juggling a very busy schedule. Through Pronghorn Athletics, I gained skills in time management, discipline and how to manage high-pressure environments. I also met some of my closest friends and made some of my fondest memories."

While she helped set new school and conference records on the field, Hailey was also gaining valuable experience in the neuroscience lab of Dr. Robert McDonald, whom she credits as a key influence in her academic development.
"Working in his lab brought classroom concepts to life," she explained. "It helped me see what neuroscience research looks like and gave me practical skills I'll use in my future career. Dr. McDonald challenges the norm and that inspired me to think critically and stay curious."

Hailey now looks forward to the next phase of her journey. This fall, she will begin a Master's in Health Information Science at Western University.

Reflecting on her time at ULethbridge, she shares a powerful message: "Every choice you make is a good one, even if it doesn't go the way you expected. What matters most is how you respond, adapt and grow from it."
And for those just beginning their Pronghorn journey, Hailey offers this advice: "Try things. Say yes. Even if something doesn't seem interesting at first, it might surprise you. Your time at ULethbridge will go by faster than you think – so make it count."

Disciplined. Hardworking. Passionate. These qualities have defined Hailey's journey – and they're exactly what define a true Pronghorn.

Congratulations, Hailey. You've made the Horns community incredibly proud.
