Pronghorns look ahead to Sunday after Dinos loss

LETHBRIDGE – The Calgary Dinos scored three times in the second half to earn a 3-1 victory over the Pronghorns Friday afternoon at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium, avenging an earlier loss to Lethbridge.

The Pronghorns created the first opportunity of the match when Alessio Gusciglio delivered a cross that Cornel Safsaf headed over the crossbar early in the first half.

Gusciglio continued to threaten, forcing Calgary goalkeeper Hany Shafie into a save with a shot from a tight angle in the 40th minute. At the other end, Tegan Romaine came up with a strong stop on Efe Udolu-Joshua just before halftime to keep the match scoreless.

Calgary broke through in the 62nd minute when Udolu-Joshua capitalized on a loose ball in the Pronghorns' penalty area, finishing into the open net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Dinos doubled their advantage in the 77th minute when substitute Josral Frederick finished a pass from Joey Plenzik after Calgary won possession in midfield, placing his shot beyond Romaine at the far post.

Lethbridge responded in the 87th minute. Joel Jaravata worked his way to the byline before setting up Micah McCusker, who recovered his own rebound and found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Pronghorns pushed for an equalizer late, but Calgary added an insurance marker in stoppage time. Greg Smith finished a Milan Ponjevic pass in the 90th minute to secure the 3-1 win for the Dinos.

The Pronghorns recorded 12 shots, with four on target, while Romaine made four saves in the loss.

The Pronghorns return to University of Lethbridge Community Stadium on Sunday, hosting the MRU Cougars at 2 p.m.
