Lethbridge, AB – The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 22, 2017.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Nikki Furukawa – Women’s Soccer
Playing in her final home games of her career, fifth-year midfielder Nikki Furukawa was a key player in the Pronghorn women’s soccer game clinching fourth place in the Prairie Division and a return to the Canada West playoffs.
Sunday afternoon during senior day, Furukawa scored the game winning goal in a 2-0 win over southern Alberta rival Mount Royal Cougars. She also assisted on the Pronghorns second goal. The win pushed the Pronghorns above the Cougars for fourth place.
Furukawa finished the season with four goals and two assists to sit second on the Pronghorns in both categories.
The Pronghorns women’s soccer team heads to Trinity Western this week to face the Fraser Valley Cascades Thursday night in the Canada West play-in game, with the winner facing the Trinity Western Spartans Saturday in the Canada West quarter-final.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Jodi Gentile – Women’s Soccer
Fourth-year rearguard Jodi Gentile lead the way as her Pronghorn women’s hockey team earned their third consecutive weekend split to open the Canada West season.
Friday night on the road, the Richmond, BC product assisted on three of the Pronghorns four goals to lead the Pronghorns to a 4-1 win over the Mount Royal Cougars. She also had a team high six shots and was a plus three.
Gentile and the Pronghorns dropped a 3-0 decision the next night to the Cougars in Lethbridge.
Through six games, Gentile leads the Pronghorns in points and is tied for third in Canada West defence scoring with four assists. She also leads the Pronghorns in shots on goal with 24.
The Pronghorn women’s hockey team heads to Vancouver this weekend to face the two-time defending Canada West Champion UBC Thunderbirds.
