Female Athlete of the Week:
Abby Duguid – Women’s Rugby
Playing in her final conference game of the season, fourth-year Edmonton product Abby Duguid was a force on both ends of the field to help the Pronghorn women’s rugby team beat the previously undefeated and U SPORTS fifth ranked Calgary Dinos 23-15.
Facing the top scoring team in the conference, led by Duguid’s precision tacking, the Pronghorns held the Dinos to a season low 15 points. Entering the game, the Dinos were averaging 32.8 points for per game.
Offensively, Duguid led the Pronghorns with two first half tries to put the Pronghorns in the lead.
On the season, Duguid led the Pronghorns in tries with three.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Garret Hughson – Men’s Hockey
Following a tough opening weekend of the Canada West season for the Pronghorn men’s hockey team, third-year goaltender Garret Hughson backstopped the Pronghorns to a road sweep of the Regina Cougars, stopping 72 of 76 shots he faced in the two wins. It was the Pronghorns first road sweep since December 2nd and 3rd 2016.
Friday night in Regina, Hughson stopped 31 shots, including 17 in the third period alone to secure a Pronghorns 3-2 win, their first of the Canada West season. In the rematch Saturday afternoon, the Foremost, Alberta product was named the first star, turning aside 41 Cougars shots in the Pronghorns 4-2 win.
In three appearances thus far this season, Hughson sports a 2-1 record with a 0.908 save percentage and a 3.62.
Hughson and his Pronghorn teammates are on the road again this coming weekend, traveling to Saskatoon to face the Saskatchewan Huskies for a pair of games at the newly opened Merlis Belsher Place
